Topic: RME UFX (original) and Asus PRIME Z370-A MB

I am n the process of spec'ing a new DAW.
I have the original Fireface UFX, it has been working flawlessly, never a hiccup!

I am wondering if anyone has experience with it and
the Asus PRIME Z370-A mobo I plan to get. Does it work?

Similarly, if you happen to have old UA UAD-2 PCIe QUADs, do they work with this mobo?

If you want to run based on Win7 then I still can recommend my 3y old build.

https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/ind … mponenten/

The system is based on enterprise grade mainboard and CPU capable to support ECC RAM.

This CPU still delivers performance in the range of 14200 passmarks.

Of course there are newer quicker CPUs available, but they usually do not support Win7 anymore, especially the new intel CPUs.

Some AMD CPUs / mainboards still might support Win7, problem is, that you are then much limited in the selection of mainboards and sadly nothing from Supermicro.

Thanks.
I will use Win10 (as I do even now with a quite old machine, i7-930 processor).

If you can wait do, as Intel plans to relase new CPUs at the end of this year that are not (so?) vulnerable against Meltdown and all those Spectre and its variants... -> Cascade Lake

BTW it has been said Cooper Lake next year stays at 14nm.

In 2020 Ice Lake shall come in 10nm.

Cooper and ICE Lake will come with new socket LGA4189, platform will support 8 (!) DRAM channels.

I built the same system you are considering earlier this year with an intel i7-8700k cpu and 32 megs RAM. I run Win10 (1809). I use the UFX (original) and Acourate software for digital crossover and digital room correction and then playback from an AES input.  I do not overclock. The only complaint was that with the standard USB inputs, I got dropouts or had to set the latency really high for playback with crossover and room correction. Following on Ramses setup, and others, I installed a Sonnet USB card and solved the problem. -Murray

ADI-2 pro fs be; UFX+; MADIfaceUSB; Startech active USB3 cable; Sonnet Allegro Pro adapter; Win11x64

Thank you. I have the same CPU and amount of memory in sight. Also not going to overclock.
Were all the USB back panel connections troublesome, both USB2 and USB3?
Also, did you try any of the motherboard USB-headers?

Edit: was the sonnet card either of these:

That would be the sensible thing to do.
But recently with the current setup I am getting a lot of random glitches.
One day it is fine even with a heavy project, the next it is cpu spike/drop out galore even with only one stereo track playing.
I have not been able to figure it out. Maybe it is something to do with the Win10 Spectre/Meltdown fixes not playing nice with this old CPU. I have no clue.

Re: RME UFX (original) and Asus PRIME Z370-A MB

Which CPU / mainboard do you have currently ?

Do you use USB from chipset (AMD, Intel) or from 3rd party (ASMedia) ?

Did you try all USB ports including USB3 ? If USB3 is from chipset it can be the case that its better in compatibility mode compared to broken ASMedia implementations.

You could also try the Sonnet card from my signature. It  has driver with a more efficient interrupt handling method, so called MSI (message signalled interrupts). By using this card you have the additional advantage to fully isolate UFX.
There can be side effects from other USB equipment, this you avoid by this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_S … Interrupts

https://www.sonnettech.com/product/alle … 3pcie.html (you need x4 socket on mainboard free, but then you have a dedicated USB3 chipset behind every port) I know you only need USB2, but the card is reliable with the MSI drivers and you have by this more options for the future. I connected 2 UFX+ (2 x USB3) and an ADI-2 Pro (USB2) to it. Then the side effects from other USB equipment (Blutooth adaper, USB3 Hub) stopped immediately.

If you only have one x1 PCIe slot free, then try this card, but then you should only use 1 port for the Recording interface and not use the other 3 free ports, as all ports share the same USB3 chip.

Re: RME UFX (original) and Asus PRIME Z370-A MB

I am pretty sure  my current mobo is this old one, I have to check
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P6X58 … fications/
CPU is Intel i7-930 2.8Ghz

They are both from 2010 an have served me well.
Latest BIOS is from 2012.

On this mobo USB ports are from NEC (USB 3.0) and Intel ICH10R controller (USB 2.0).
NEC ports do not work reliably with the UFX, the Intel ones have always worked flawlessly.

Thanks for the info on the Sonnet cards.

3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x16, x8, x8 or x16, x16, x1)
1 x PCIe x1
2 x PCI

Place the sonnet card into the 2nd x16 slot because these are the only PCIe 2.0 sockets in your system.
Then your system should still be able to deliver x16 for the graphics card, if you have one in the 1st x16 slot.

The Sonnet Pro is a "PCI Express 2.0 x4" card.
