Topic: Help with direct monitor please

Hi guys. Just need some newb help. Just got a UFX2. The Totalmix app is very confusing for me. Im coming from MOTU. The routing matrix is very confusing. Can someone please explain (VERY VERY SIMPLE, I have dyslexia) how to set up direct monitoring?

Thx in advance.

Re: Help with direct monitor please

In TotalMix FX (TM FX):

1. Reset TM FX to have a defined starting point:
    - Options -> Reset Mix -> Total Reset
    - Options -> Reset Mix -> Set inputs mono / outputs stereo (ADM)
Esp the 2nd step is important I read somewhere, so that ADM works ideally
    (mono inputs, stereo outputs).
And I think in the DAW you need to organize it the same.

2. check, that Submix Mode is enabled (on the right side under routing mode)

3. in the control room section (bottom/right) click the "Assign" button
to assign analog outputs to "Main Out", "Phones1" and "Phones2"
I assume, that your speakers are connected to HW Output AN1/2.
- assign: Main Out -> AN1/2
- assign: Phones1 -> AN9/10
- assign: Phones2 -> AN11/12
By this you assign analog outputs to the Control Room Section so that you can use control Room functions like "mono", "mute", "dim", etc ...
Watch TM FX bottom row, as soon as you assign the HW Outputs to the Control room, the channels move into the Control Room to the right.

4. Routing
You can configure a basic routing via Options -> Reset Mix, i.e.
Options -> Reset Mix -> Straight Playback with all to "Main Out"

5. Routing manually configured
Click with the Mouse to a HW output (bottom row in TM FX)
Now you see the routing to this HW output (also called "Submix") by watching
the Fader Positions of HW Inputs (Top Row) and SW Playback Channels (middle Row).

So, if you want to hear the Mic AN 9 on Phones1.
Click to Phones1 (remember, this one is already in the control room)
And now raise the fader of HW Input AN 9 in the top row.

6. Store routing in a Snapshot

Again, routing in TM FX "Submix Mode" is easy like this:
- click to a HW output (bottom row)
- raise faders of HW Inputs and SW Playback Channels

Re: Help with direct monitor please

Thank you so much... I will give it a shot./

Re: Help with direct monitor please

If you have a Windows PC you should also create WDM devices, see point 10 of my step by step primer, because the Operating System and most applications do not support ASIO.

Create at least one WDM device for AN 1/2 and configure it as speaker in the next TAB of the driver setting dialog.

By this a Speaker Symbol is being created in Windows Sound settings window.
Use this as the default sound device for Windows.

Then you are done with this.

To get Windows Sound to the monitors

Click to HW Output for Main (AN 1/2) in the Control Room Section.
Raise the Fader of SW Playback Channel AN 1/2
Save / Update the updated routing in a TM FX Snapshot.

Re: Help with direct monitor please

I have severe dyslexia so I have a hard time understanding written directions. I tried your steps and when I would play anything through the interface I would hear the music but there was also a weird buzzing noise. The buzzing noise stops after a minute if I stop the music. Any idea what that happens?? Btw, With your routing suggestion I am still able to use all the analogue hardware I/O for hardware effects?

Re: Help with direct monitor please

This is how I have it set now. Everything works fine but I dont think I have direct monitoring.

Re: Help with direct monitor please

1. In regards to Direct Monitoring. In Cubase it needs to be enabled, maybe this is also required in Reaper.

2. In the screenshot you selected ADAT 1/2 in the HW outputs.
Wouldnt it be more interesting to see the Submix for Main Out ?!

Re: Help with direct monitor please

In step one you said change to Set inputs mono / outputs stereo (ADM)
But in step 4 you said set to  Straight Playback with all to "Main Out"

Which one is it?

Again, thank you for your help. Basically I am trying to hear my guitar before it goes through the daw so my playing isn't off with the metronome

Re: Help with direct monitor please

Both, you see it on TM FX that this selection is valid.

The one is for ADM (mono ins, stereo outs)
The other is that all SW Playback Channels are being router to Main Out. This is usually what "you" want.
