Topic: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Hello,

I am long time user of RME products and I have been using AEB4-I and AEB4-O with my HDSP 9632 without any noise or distortions for years.

I bought AI4S-192 and AO4S-192 to replace my AEB extensions and now I have very loud noise and when I play something its heavily distorted. I have two HDSP 9632 and I tried it on both cards and its the same problem, identical noise and distortion so I can say the problem is with AO4S-192 card?

Do I need to change anything in HDSP settings?

Currently I'm back on my AEB until I fix this, if its even possible?

I'm using Windows 10 64Bit, with latest firmware (155) and latest drivers (4.30)

Thanks

What are the outputs connected to? Does the "distortion" happen regardless of signal level?

I tried all outputs from AO4S-192, same problem, heavy distortion when playing music (any level), weird EMI like beeps and noise when idle.

That sounds like a voltage might be missing - is the HDSP9632 working correctly on its analog I/Os? Otherwise I have no idea.

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Hmm, voltage could be the problem, I'm using Delock PCIe to PCI riser since I don't have PCI slot and it has power connector that goes to the PSU, it works fine with AEB because AEB is connected separately to the PSU and AO4S-192 is connect to the card directly without additional power like AEB. I tried on another PC with PCI slot and it works, do you think its Delock riser/adapter related and I can't do anything about it?

Thanks

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Make sure the power is properly connected to the delock. Or try another connector from the PSU.

Thanks, will try today with another PSU slot

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Tried different cable and different PSU slot, same thing. But I notice only 2 LED's light up on AO4S when connected to Delock, so its definitely not enough voltage ?

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Or a missing one, might be a delock issue or fault, ask them!
IFAICS PCIe only suplies 3.3 and 12V. The 5V is comming from the adapter. I don`t know which the RME daughterboard is missing.
Maybe also try a different PCIe slot, maybe a 4x or 16x too.

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Problem is I have Maximus Gene XI motherboard and only have one PCIe x1 slot, other one is x16 and its used by the GPU.

This is the one i used, nothing specified about voltages:
https://www.delock.com/produkte/S_41857/merkmale.html

Here it mentions 5V:

RME Manual:
Note: the AO carries three SMD LEDs, indicating the presence of the power supplies +5V, +12V
and –12 V.

...and -12V is now missing. I asked you above: it would mean that the card's own analog I/Os also fail.

You are right, Analog I/O has the same issue as AO4S, only AEB works, so it's definitely Delock problem. Only solution is probably to get AIO or another motherboard I guess?

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

The PCI Express bus does not provide -12 V anymore (also +5V are missing). Our HDSPe AIO card therefore generates -12 V out of the still existing +12 V.

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

This is not a known issue. Could just be a defective delock. Or a bad delock ribbon cable connection.
Startech are known to work ifaik

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Thanks guys for all the help, I will probably get RME AIO at the end to solve this. It will be better in the long run.

Installed RME AIO today, together with A04S-192, AI4S-192 and WCM, everything works perfectly, no noise, all leds on all cards are green cool

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Hi excuse me, I read your post about AO4S and AI4S expansion cards. I installed the AO4S on the HDSPe AIO, it works very well but I can only get the 3 and 4 outputs, the 1 and 2 don't go out at all. It should be just an enabling problem but through HDSPMixer (I use Linux), I was able to enable only 3 and 4, 1 and 2 I can't get them out. I tried in the mixer drop-down menus to select the analog outputs but nothing I can't do. Do you happen to have any news you can give me? Even using Windows, I think the mixer is the same or I know it's the same in functions...

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

Make sure that when you select HARDWARE OUTPUTS 3/4 and 5/6 you have SOFTWARE PLAYBACK 1/2 channels up to 0dB

Re: Noise and distorsion issues with HDSP 9632 + AO4S-192

I'm sorry, but I don't think I understand what you're trying to tell me. How do I see this software enable in the mixer, where should I look at this option you tell me? I don't know it...
