Topic: How well is MADI implemented by other manufacturers?

Hi!

I'm using a UFX+ (Master, all clocks via MADI) with several MADI devices:
- RME Octamic XTC (+ Octamic 8 via Adat on the XTC)
- Lynx Aurora 16 with MADI-Option
- Antelope Orio32+ via MADI

I'm suspecting the Orion to cause some problems:

1. It doesn't seem to forward any Midi-over-MADI Data.
I have to use a Midi-Cable in order to control the XTC in TotalMix.

2. I can't set any MADI Device-ID inside the Orion Software
(if that miserable attempt at programming can even be called software... You guys truly spoilt me!)

This just doesn't seem right to me - how can the delay compensation work if there's no device-ID?
Even the Lynx has an on-board jumper to set it.

Am I missing something here?

I also suspect the Orion to mess with the total roundtrip latency of my system.
The roundtrip latency changes daily, so I'm forced to set it manually every time for outboard use
(the driver-reported latency stays stable, but the measured ping is between 10-16 additional samples,
whatever the latency-du-jour.)

Anyone have any advice or tips to try?

Hello!

I read the manual for the Orion32+ to see if I could offer any help, but there was no mention of MIDI-Over-MADI.
I researched a bit further and found out that RME was the first company to implement this!
Later on, I read that other manufacturers implemented it, as well, but it's not standard for every Madi Device.
So I guess it's not implemented in the Orion.

About the device id, I don't know! I couldn't find anything about that, either!

About the RTL, I suspect you 're on Mac and I have no clue regarding aggregate devices and such, but it does seem weird to have different latencies, every day! smile
Maybe, it has something to do with the Antelope plug-ins?

MIDI over MADI is a proprietary protocol used by RME, DirectOut and Ferrofish. Device IDs and Automatic Delay Compensation are proprietary mechanisms used by RME and DirectOut. Serial data transmission over MADI is a proprietary protocol used by RME, DirectOut and Studer AG.

BTW, delay compensation basically needs no device ID. It will fail if you use various interfaces with different internal delays (your setup) due to using different AD/DA converters and different digital latencies. More specific details are in the manuals of units that were the first to support this kind of stuff, like ADI-648 and ADI-642.
