Topic: Windows 10 issues setting RME UFX II (recognized) as sound I/O device

Hi RME forum!

I recently switched from a Mac OSX system to Windows 10, and the switch has been rather rough, and I seem to have found some issues beyond what is detailed here: https://www.rme-usa.com/installation-guide.html

My computer is recognizing my UFX II, says it is up to date and working correctly, but the computer does not allow me to select the UFX II as my sound input/output device from the available drop-down menus in sound preferences.
----
Details:

Computer -- HP Spectre 530x 15"
OS -- Windows 10 home

I've installed, checked, uninstalled, and reinstalled every driver that I can think of, including performing multiple system restarts.

When I connect the UFX II to the computer, Totalmix Fx opens, and the computer recognizes the UFX II as a "sound device"

UFX II is listed on the "Bluetooth and other devices" page in Windows 10.

UFX II is also appearing under "devices and printers" (control panel --> hardware and sound --> devices and printers)

When I click on UFX II, its properties show: "driver date -- 25/nov/2020" "driver version -- 0.9.734.0", and its status is "this device is working properly"

So...my computer is definitely recognizing the interface! I just can't get it to appear in "sound settings" that I can select it as my system's input/output device.

Please advise! I'm new to Windows... trying to learn my way around that I can troubleshoot such issues myself.
I apologize in advance if a solution to this has been detailed. If there is such a thing, I am trying my best to find it!

As I am now into my 2nd day and 5th hour of troubleshooting this, and as I am failing to come up with new ideas of what to try, I felt it was time to SOS and ask for this forum's assistance.

Warmly,
echo

Re: Windows 10 issues setting RME UFX II (recognized) as sound I/O device

Windows and most applications do not support ASIO.
So for Windows and non-asio-aware applications you need to create WDM devices for those I/O ports
where e.g. monitors and phones are connected to.
This you do in the RME driver settings see "WDM devices".
One of these ports you select as "Speaker Device", then you get a Speaker Icon for this particular port,
so that you can identify it easier, this you make to the Windows default sound device.

For pure DAW work you simply load the ASIO driver, the ASIO driver has direct access to the recording interface and also bypasses the Windows Sound system with the goal to avoid any potential quality degradation and latency.

A big thank you, ramses! Will be back at my computer soon to try this.

If possible can you walk me through accessing the RME driver settings? I feel embarrassed to admit that I have not been able to find it.

I have been searching the following path and clicking on everything I can imagine might bring it up: device manager --> sound/game controllers --> rme ufx ii --> rme ufx ii properties --> driver details --> ____?

I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers as well, but unless the driver config was there and I missed it, it did not seem to be there.

I also see point 11. of the tonstudio guide, and there as well it seems like it should be ...really easy to find... I am feeling quite blind.

Re: Windows 10 issues setting RME UFX II (recognized) as sound I/O device

On the topic of setting up WDM Devices on windows is there any way to force 5.1 (instead of 7.1) as the default multi-channel configuration. Games and applications assume I'm running 7.1 hardware channels but I only have 5.1. Which means the fold downs are wrong/not happening.

I've outlined the problem here: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=31910

The driver settings are in the taskbar notification area, see Windows docu: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win … 63c1d437c3

In the RME manual you find this in when searching for the term "WDM", chapter 7.2
https://www.rme-audio.de/download/fface_ufx2_d.pdf
https://www.rme-audio.de/download/fface_ufx2_e.pdf

And yes, it's described in #11 of my blog on tonstudio forum. I added now this to the chapter to make it clearer.

"The driver settings you find in the notification area which is located at the right end of the taskbar at the bottom of your screen. For the MADIface driver the icons name is "MADIface Series Settings". If the icon is hidden, then you have to customize the taskbar."
