Topic: ADI 2 Pro Dac How to root system audio In Pro Tools on a Mac

Hi lovely people.

A quick newbie question.

I am getting an RME ADI2 Pro dac and I was wondering what the easiest way is to send system audio from a mac back into Pro tools with the RME.
So far I've been using a UA Apollo mkii twin and there I just used the virtual channels from the UA Apollo software.
I can't seem to find anything in the RME manual that works similarly.

Thank you for the time and help!

All the best

ADI-2 DAC is not a typical recording system with routing software.

If you do not simply use it for playing audio / as a DAC, it's better to combine it with a recording interface and then to use it for the monitoring section.

ADI-2 Pro’s internal Loopback function might help.

Read manual page 23 (and page 41 for details if needed):
“Routes the current output signal to the corresponding USB record channels.“

I regard loopback recording as a nice add-on, but if he has Pro Tools and mentions an UAD recording interface it's much more likely that he really needs a reacording interface with TotalMix FX. Operation with TM FX will also be much easier and more comfortably.

Now he is getting the ADI-2 Pro as replacement for the Apollo and there is no TotalMix for ADI-2.

If you don’t go for recording external sources a lot, ADI-2 Pro can do the job quite fine.
Even then, for stuff like single vocal recordings e.g. (using an external Mic-Preamp) - why not!

Re: ADI 2 Pro Dac How to root system audio In Pro Tools on a Mac

We do not know his requirements and I do not know UAD very well to know what UA virtual channels are that he seems to miss now.

I wanted to proactively point out, that in the RME product lines of devices the ADI-2 DAC is not a typical recording interface which normally includes a virtual mixer. And esp. in the case of RME recording interfaces have a high reputation because of TM FX and bundled tools/software. So he might have high expectations at this point.

Now where he is informed about that, he needs to decide whether this is enough for him or whether he wants the real deal a RME recording interface plus the wonderful features of ADI-2 * FS fo the monitoring section ..

Re: ADI 2 Pro Dac How to root system audio In Pro Tools on a Mac

Hi Bari,

so here we go again ....

This info explains, what an UA virtual channel is: https://help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articl … ac-and-PC-

"This article will guide you through the steps required to configure both your DAW and Console software to send audio from your DAW to Virtual Channels in Console. One common use for this configuration would be to setup a discrete low-latency headphone mix with UAD processing - audio can be sent from the DAW into Virtual Channels in Console where UAD plug-ins can be applied, and from there the signal can be sent to a Cue send or output along with the live UAD audio interface input channels to create a custom headphone mix. [...] "

To create custom headphone mixes from DAW tracks or a mix of inputs and DAW tracks he will need a recording interface with TotalMix FX as I assumed already.

TotalMix FX gives you a great flexibility, to be able to create a submix for each of the HW outputs individually.
In submix mode you simply click to the phones HW output and then move the faders as required of
- HW inputs (TM FX top row of channels)
- SW playbacks (Audio from PC / application / DAW).

This way you can create a submix per HW output hence the name "submix" mode.

Further information about TotalMix, free RME Video Turorials, see here:

A compact but very powerful combination could be for you a combination of
- UCX II and
- ADI-2 Pro
UCX II got a facelift last recently and has e.g. extremely nice mic preamps (like those from UFX II)
and features like Autoset, DURec and full implementation of FX chip and much more,
some details see this posting: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=33222

PC/Mac ---- USB2 ------ UCX II -----AES-----ADI-2 Pro --------> monitor/phones

Optional: ARC USB

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.
