Topic: Help with totalmix routing for newbie

I just purchased a UCXii. I have been able to connect monitors and outboard pres and get signal/sound out of outputs 1/2(main out) but cannot seem to grasp the concept of how to get sound from outputs 3/4 to my headphone amp or get any sound from the headphone jack. I have unsuccessfully tried to read the manual and watch videos to remedy this to no avail. I come from a focusrite clarret 8pre and the mixer software was very intuitive and simple to follow. So far totalmix has been a convoluted mess and nightmare for me. I'm not an audio engineer and all the block diagrams etc.. and harware inputs to outputs and software playback mean nothing to me. I don't want to mix in totalmix. I use reaper for that. I just need to get a signal/sound to my headphone amp and headphone jack. Please help!

Re: Help with totalmix routing for newbie

Even if you do not believe, it's very easy and straightforward.

1. Check that TM FX is in submix mode (upper right, blue area)

2. Click the "assign" button in TotalMix FX control room and assign HW outputs for
- "Main Out", usually HW Output AN 1/2
- "Phones 1", HW output AN 7/8.
Note: by this the HW outputs are being moved into the control room on the right side so that you can use control room functions like DIM.

Then all you need to do is to create a routing by clicking to an HW output and
moving the faders of
- HW inputs, top row, audio from your UCX II's inputs in near real time
- SW playbacks, middle row, audio from your PC via USB with the usual latency over USB

This you perform for e.g. the outputs in the control room (Main Out and Phones 1).

You can store those routings in snapshots.

For Windows and applications without ASIO support you need to create Windows compatible devices.
This you do in the MADIface driver settings (see on Windows desktop on the bottom right in the Windows notification field).
Create WDM devices for AN 1/2 and make this to a speaker device in the next TAB speaker.

This creates dynamically "on demands" sound devices in your Windows audio settings.
There you set it to be the default sound device for windows, now you can also play audio with e.g. Youtube.

This routing to Monitors and Phones you save best to two of the 8 snapshot positions on the right side.
The whole setup you can Save as Workspace.

All this is explained in the manual and in the very good RME tutorial videos on Youtube.

Further information you find in this sticky, also a step by step guide how to create a good 1st time setup.

Thank you guys for the help.I finally made it happen thanks to the good advice here and re-watching the videos. I love the sound of the UCXii and it's definitely a step up from the focusrite clarett.

Re: Help with totalmix routing for newbie

Very nice to hear, enjoy your new device ;-) If you have any issue, pls don't hesitate to ask.

Re: Help with totalmix routing for newbie

I will add a link to the RME Knowledge Base where you can find several tutorial videos about Totalmix FX. Here is a basic one on routing:  https://www.rme-usa.com/totalmix-fx-routing-layout.html

If you go to the RME homepage and click on the Knowledge Base button towards the top, scroll down about half way and you'll see all the videos there.

I also highly recommend this stream from RME with a little more in depth information. Totalmix FX is an amazing tool and takes some time to get the most out of it but so worth learning:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SJhl2wBc2k&t=306s

Enjoy your UCXII. I just got mine this week and it's a monster of an interface despite being the size of a book smile

Thanks, but it's already provided by this sticky

which - among some other useful information - points to a collection of videos here:

The intention is to have everything useful regarding TM FX in one place and a little intro.

thanks Ramses! yes, the sticky threads are very useful. I think a lot of people overlook them when trying to fix an issue. their focus is usually on their thread waiting for smart people like yourself to help them (including myself in that camp from time to time!)

appreciate your expertise!
