Topic: UFX II Overheating

Hello,

I have a UFX II, brand new, and while it's sitting on my desk and not in a rack, the bottom left gets quite hot. The top is warm but the bottom left, under the preamps is pretty hot to the touch, although I can still keep my hand on it.

Any advices?

I appreciate your responses!

Many thanks,

Allen

Hi Allen. My first thought is give it some space underneath, either with risers or mounting it in a rack. I don't believe the temps you're seeing are anything but normal and expected. Some people (myself included) also get a whisper fan for air movement and I can tell you that this helps immensely to keep my UCXII cool to the touch.

Hi Steve,

Thanks so much for this information. I will consider a rack and probably a whisper fan (is that quiet enough)?

Appreciate it!

Re: UFX II Overheating

Allen,

I use very quiet 5V PC fans for silent cooling and just use old AC adapters to power them. You don't need anything really large or powerful...just enough to move the air across the unit. I'd recommend at least 80mm size but the 120mm can move more air at slower speeds and can be potentially quieter. It does an amazing job for me and I don't hear them at all in my workspace.

Re: UFX II Overheating

You need no blower, simply leave some space between the components so that heat does not pile up and that you have a little airflow on the top and the bottom of all devices.

For RME devices I am using Thomann Eco compact racks with 23cm depths, for three devices I use a 4RU rack at minimum for that purpose. With 23cm the rack is not too depth so that you get a good airflow.

For the devices with more depth like e.g. a Lexicon PCM91 I am using a similar rack with 35 cm depth. This is planned for two devices, so here also 1RU more.

@ramses Do you know why the ADI´s come without decent rackmount solution?

ADI-2 DAC, ADI-2 PRO, DigifaceUSB, UCXII, ARC, HEGEL.h80, KEF.ls50, HD650, ie400pro _,.\''/.,_

As a rule of thumb, I'd tend to say if it doesn't actually hurt, it's quite ok.... A warm casing means heat from inside is dissipated well.

Thanks so much for your replies, guys! Appreciate it!

I'll most probably use these rubber foots under it, until I buy a 4U rack. I figure that leaving 1.5cm between the desk and the unit, it can make a difference. I have also found ones that are 3cm in height but I have cats around the house and won't guarantee for them not jumping on the interface, haha.
