Never ever any encoder failure .. humidity here 41% (summer).

you're so lucky --- here in Tokyo humidity is close to 80% in summer https://weather-and-climate.com/average … okyo,Japan. maybe that's why mines failed so quickly.
But I actually use it heavily, daily. I do think my rotation pulses already exceeds its lifespan after half year.

If you "cycle" (whatever that means) approximately 10 times a day most days, that's roughly 3,000 cycles a year.

Additional info in this document "Alps Alpine's Encoders" from April, 2020:
https://tech.alpsalpine.com/e/products/ … tures.html

The document refers to a  pulse from one detent position to the next, as a cycle On to On.
The EC11E15244G1 has 30 detents per revolution, producing 15 pulses or cycles per revolution.
If taken at face value, that makes the 15,000-20,000 cycle lifetime specification a little concerning to me in high-use situations.

Humidity and air-exposure without usage are also documented concerns, as described in items (3) and (11) of "EC11 Series - Series Common Info":
https://tech.alpsalpine.com/prod/e/html … ommon.html

The magnetic EM11B claims to address both high usage and high humidity.  Sells at a reasonable price in high quantities.  16 detents/16 pulses.

Note:  EC11J/K have been removed from Alps Alpine catalog as of June 2021, with no replacements indicated:

Re: Odd jumps during volume change

Hi everyone,

I would like to contribute with my own experience.

I have the same issue with the knob (ADI2 PRO Anniversary Edition).
I have similar issue with knobs in my car.

It's not a faulty knob issue, i think, but a conception issue.

This behaviour is caused by magnetism on hands.

When my wife or other person use the device no issue.
When i use the knob : erratic sensibility oh the knob.
Sometimes the jumps are about 10 db with one light turn !

I can lower this bad effects with a screwdriver (de)magnetizer. I use it on the knob and on my hands.
It's not reproductible if you don't have "magnetic hands"

I'm looking for a better method to demagnetize my hands completly.

Best regards

This is indeed an Encoder issue.

RME fixed it with a very sophisticated filtering in the latest firmwares.
Default setting usually fixes it.

If not, increase the filter value under:
SETUP / Options / Display / Encoder Filter /

Regarding demagnetizing your hands:

I’m not sure if this was a joke but OK:
There is nothing in the human body that can store magnetism.
The simple proof:
If you move your hands around a compass it does not react in any way.
Do the same with an iron nail and you will notice a difference.

The proof the other way round:
If you place or move a strong magnet (e.g a fridge magnet) at the encoder, it does not change that situation.

Re: Odd jumps during volume change

Just an idea - hands might be charged by static electricity. Could it influence the encoder function?

Cheers, Ernst

This could easily be fixed with rubberbands or shrinkhose at the encoders. ESD wristband would work too.

No seriously Id go with KaiS idea:

"RME fixed it with a very sophisticated filtering in the latest firmwares.

"If not, increase the filter value under:
SETUP / Options / Display / Encoder Filter /"

This from MC´s firmware entry:

"Encoder jumping and direction errors: This firmware includes a new logic unit that intelligently detects and eliminates encoder switching contact errors. In addition, there is a variable filter with levels 1 to 5. Default is 1, which is largely similar in feel to the previously used filter. Higher values lead to an attenuation of very fast changes. Strongly jumping or backward running encoders can in most cases be used normally again with the setting 3. Very fast, short rotations can be replaced by medium-fast rotations after a short period of familiarization."

Id go with this before rushing to holographic room treatment.

Have a nice weekend.! Time to pop a can and put some cans on..

In a car with everything made of plastic this could happen.

Anyway, the phenomenon of ADI-2 Encoder jumping is known, and even better, solved!

Re: Odd jumps during volume change

Thank you very much Kais and Happy amateur.

Your advice help me make bearable but still not sufficient.

I put the setting Encoder Filter to the max, 5 instead of 0.
It 's really an improvment, drop are not so frequent and have less amplitude.

But i still observe drops of 3 db instead of 0,5 even with slow movment.

And my wife for example still have not difficulties using this knob and 0 drops

Best regards

Dont’ know if it’s pure magnetism related, i use a wera demagnetizer and it helps

When my hands are in contact with some kind of rubbed plastic it degrade itself in few days or contact with polyethylen can melt it without heating.

I’m looking for explanations for all this but i don’t have one
