Topic: UFX II: gain changes for input 'mic 9' only change RIGHT channel?

I just setup a Fireface UFX II and I'm learning TotalMix FX.  For my first recording I'm feeding a (Eurorack synthesizer) signal into Mic/input 9.  I've got a TS cable running from the Eurorack into Mic/input 9.

In the TotalMix FX hardware input for this track for this input, the input level is set to "Instrument".  That is, as I understand it, it has a 8.0db gain right off the bat.   Pan is set to 0.  The track is set to MONO (it's a mono cable going into it, as it's a TS cable).

If I pull the slider for that input all the way down in the 'hardware input' panel, that is to -∞, I still get a strong signal showing up from my input in the 'green led' display (the one that indicates levels).  The blue level indicator in the window is hovers around -7.1 with the slider all the way down.

Also, the sound only comes out of the LEFT headphone side.  As I raise the slider for the input up, the sound volume increases only on the RIGHT headphone side, starting from 0 (silent).

(In the 'software playback' panel, Pan is set to 0 for the headphones channel, and is set to STEREO.  In the 'control room' panel, the 'phones 1' track has Pan set to 0 and is also set to 'stereo'.)

  • Why is there always sound (signal) coming out of the LEFT side no matter how far down I pull the slider (is this because of the 8.0 gain for instruments?)

  • And importantly, why does the slider in the 'mic/line 9' window only control the RIGHT side, and the LEFT side doesn't change in volume?

A friend of mine with the UFX II is stumped, as am I.  Any info much appreciated!

1: pulling down the input fader controls the current routing volume, not the Gain. The Gain is controlled via the Gain knob.

2: show us a screenshot of TM FX with phones selected as current submix, then we quickly might identify the error.

Thanks. Is there an easy way to upload images in this forum? I wasn't able to see one. Or do I need to somehow host the images elsewhere and provide a link?

At the moment I have a mono signal going into the MIC/LINE input 9 on the front face of the UFX II.  If I set the 'hardware input' in TotalMix FX for this input to MONO, I get sound out of only the left side of the headphones.  Perhaps that's how it should be, since it is a mono signal.

However, if I set the 'hardware input' for input 9 to STEREO, I get sound out of both sides of the headphones output.  Changing the slider only affects the RIGHT side volume.  The LEFT side remains constant.  As I raise the slider, the volume on the RIGHT rises until it equals or surpasses the left.

  • Is everything operating as it should be?  When the hardware input is set to MONO, should I get sound out of only the LEFT side?

  • Why left?  Why not right?  Is there a way to change it?

  • What is the correct way to have the MONO signal coming in occupy both stereo channels, both in what's recorded to my DAW (Logic Pro X) and in the headphones?  Apparently if I set the hardware input to STEREO and then raise the slider about half way, it "sounds" right, that is, the MONO signal comes out of both sides of the headphones, but this seems an imprecise way of doing things.

I include a screenshot.  If you need more or more detailed images, please let me know.  Thanks for any help!

I think I have it now!  The pan was set far LEFT in the hardware input.

Out of curiosity, what's going on if I set the input to STEREO?  Why does the slider affect the right channel only?

If you set input 9 to stereo, it will be combined with input 10, as you need two channels to make stereo.

The pan knob of the input channel 9 is set fully left, may you make it center...?

A handy tip: In the Preferences menu (Options->preferences) you can check a box, "Center Balance/Pan when changing Mono/Stereo":)
