Topic: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

Hello,

I have multiple devices (CD player, network streamer i.e. chromecast audio, TV) that I want to route via the ADI-2 DAC. What are some switchers that are recommended for use?

I have a monoprice 4x1 switch that is capable of 192kHz sampling rate and up to 24-bit resolution:
Product # 13345    Monoprice Toslink S/PDIF 4x1 Switch with Remote

There's an automatic switcher on Tindie that also looks well built:

[Mod edit: Mini review in post 5]

Have members here had any experience these two? Is there something else out there that beats these two?

Be happy if it works and if it really supports 192 kHz, did you test this already ?

Oehlbach claims that their Optosel 4:1 is capable of switching up to 192 kHz, but they have only TOSLINK's built-in which support only 96 kHz.

Amazon corrected it meanwhile on their product page, with Oehlbach I am not sure. They promised to fix the product and replace my units, but since around 2 years nothing but bad promises and no exchange. So if they have on their product page still 192 kHz, then I fear Oehlbach is still in "dreamland" and is not honest to their customers. Otherwise I would have expected, that they would have processed the service request of my HiFi dealer, to exchange my two units.
Even Oehlbachs service on this issue is far away from being good.

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

I have the one on Tindie and it works fine but I have only tried it with 16/44. There is one issue that you should be aware of and that is that the source needs to switch off when not in use. Most of my sources do but my Pro-ject ephono optical preamp with optical output does not. So I put that on a separate input on the DAC (coax with a converter).

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

The 'Automatic SPDIF (Optical/RCA) Audio Switch' from Tindie (link in first post) came quicker than expected. I ordered the version with 4 optical / 3 coaxial inputs and 1 optical/coaxial output.

This unit has one single 'issue' for typical RME users: it doesn't speak ADAT, because it uses a special SPDIF transceiver inside.

Apart from that I am really blown away. This small unit does everything right, works perfectly, and passed all my tests without any problem. It works as true pass-through (24 bit audio data and channel status), supports all main sample rates from 32 kHz up to 192 kHz, and selects the inputs automatically as logical (and useful) as possible.

The one thing that astonished me most: the internal chip, a WM8805, offers jitter reduction in the audio band. The Wolfson data sheet does not talk about that at all. Yes, this thing reduces jitter by at least a factor of 40 where it matters, without the use of a SRC. A very rare feature, even more so for such a device.

SPDIF coaxial starts to detect an input signal at 0.3 Vss, but after locking works down to 0.15 Vss, so is very reliable and compatible. The coax output is transformer-coupled and provides 0.6 V (standard is 0.5 V), just the little bit of reserve that one wants to see and needs in real-life operation. The optical I/Os use DLR/DLT2160, the right ones for successful 192 kHz operation.

All I can say is: Highly recommended! Now the only thing missing is another version with remote control...

Update: Here is the jitter suppression measurement. Works even better/stronger than I first wrote. Int Loopback is the AP's Jitter generator loopback to its digital input. At 200 ns jitter (2.5 kHz modulation), the Auto SPDIF Switcher removes the jitter nearly completely. The measured jitter damping is higher than 50 dB.

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

Glad to hear that it passes the expert test. I am really pleased with its functionality. I don't miss the remote control as everything is automatic.

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

@MC The only thing missing is RME ADI-2 DAC with multiple inputs of its own kinda like Benchmark DAC3 or upcoming DAC8 Stereo by Okto Research :-) Could have created the absolute game changer if you have decided to do the same...

But anyway, thank you for testing that particular device - been looking at it for a while, because it's the only switcher i know of that works automatically. Good to know there is a proper solution for all of us out there to increase input count of your otherwise splendid DAC.

BTW If you want something remotely controlled, then chinese market is full of cheap devices like that. Can't say anything about theire quality though.

They will fail at 192 kHz or directly after unpacking...

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

I recently bought this switch. Unfortunately all my 192kHz enabled devices do not work when passing this switch. The RME display flickers an says something like unsupported signal and preemphasis detected. Going back to 96KHz everything is ok. Same devices connected directly to ADI2 work pefectly at 192kHz.
Another glitch is when long cable runs fron Tv are involved, be it optical or coax. Those signal work without hickups when connected directly. When passing through the switch I get drop outs.
Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

Since some time Oehlbach offers a Mk II unit for around €88 which supports now 192 kHz.

I'd like to suggest this:

Only 2 ports and limited to 96 kHz. Then I would spend a few bucks more to get
— 4 ports
— up to 192 kHz
— with a remote.

Plus … see other advantages here in a later post: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.ph … 89#p192489

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

Does this Tindie automatic toslink switch add latency?

I'm looking to use the optical output of my TV to watch movies. I am concerned about the lip sync...

Thanks!

With most current TVs, you can compensate for this in the TV settings.

It is purely digital data transmission via optical input and output, without any latencies for A/D or D/A conversion (and even these would not be noticeable with current converters).

rawac wrote:

Absolutely no need for any latency compensation.
Only required in cases where maybe the source media (DVD or Blu-ray is not fully synchronous).

I would take the new OEHLBACH Optosel 4:1 MKII:
https://www.oehlbach.com/de/audio-equip … l-4-1-mkii
https://www.amazon.de/Oehlbach-XXL-HDMI … S9ANK?th=1

It looks better and has the better features:
— supports up to four devices (e.g., TV, Blu-ray, Computer, Streamer to ADI-2 DAC/Pro).
— supports up to 192 kHz.
— good working remote.
— at the device easily switchable between channels
— good visible green status LED, showing which port is selected
— all I/O ports and the cables are at the back so that you do not see the cables
— leaves enough room on the front for having a good status overview about the selected input channel

Does the MKII version of OPTOSEL 4:1 support ADAT? The previous version did not, as MC wrote in a post after he tested it.

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

I use this: https://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg0 … EML007-005
Optical only. Clunky and ugly but completely functional and costs less than Euro5.

I'm pretty sure it takes the simple approach and simply aligns the ends of light fibres. So true optical switching. No PSU required. No latency. Handles any data rate or protocol. KISS.

I was apprehensive that the inevitable air gap might introduce jitter. But since ADI2-DAC FS is so super-duper immune to jitter I bought one to try and it seems perfect.

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

The protocol doesn't matter, the device passes data through, no matter which protocol, from the description:

"The Oehlbach Optosel 4:1 MKII (successor to the Optosel 4:1) accepts up to four digital optical signals and forwards them unprocessed to an AV receiver...."

Thanks! I saw that but was unsure whether or not ADAT was supported as well or just SPDIF.

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

I have been using the switch from Beni at Tindie since 2019 (7 inputs, 2 outputs). It solved my digital connectivity problem. I liked it so much that I bought another one for a second setup where I really didn't require one, but was nice to have. It will cover most use cases out of the box, fully automatic, and it also supports a serial protocol to fiddle if you need to. Highly recommended.

Re: Recommended Optical Switch to use with ADI-2 DAC

I've just installed the OEHLBACH Optosel 4:1 MKII as mentioned by Ramses and it passed the RME bit tests without problem.

I only wonder why some Amazon customers complain about the loss of signal quality. This is nonsens, right?

You can test this with the bit test available on ADI-2 DAC: Just play the files and see what the ADI-2 DAC reports.

The files are here: http://www.rme-audio.de/download/bit_test_wavs.zip

Exactly.

In the old design, Oehlbach used the wrong components with limited bandwidth, which could only transfer up to 96 kHz.
This has been fixed in the Mk II version.
Additionally, the new product got a price adjustment and became even cheaper.
