Re: Why is it so hard to accept linux?

You can only offer such an interface with FPGA, first class drivers, TotalmixFX, DIGIcheck, headphone output, at such a low price if you don't implement some features, e.g. FX chip, stand-alone operation, Class Compliant mode ...
The Digiface USB already offers some special features like four ADAT ports, which can all be switched to SPDIF protocol if needed.

But I think it is a good hint to give this device at least Class Compliant mode, even if it should cost a few Euro more, so it can be used more flexible.

That would mean then also more prospective customers / buyers, if one could connect it to Apple IOS devices or also Linux.
If you then want to record with an iPAD, then you can easily connect your most beautiful preamps via ADAT up to 192 kHz even without these preamps have CC mode, which is a great feature of the Octamic XTC. But it is not available at the moment and the 12Mic has no CC mode for USB implemented as far as I remember. Is a pure management interface for firmware upgrades.

I think that would make sense if you could then use the Digiface as "universal adapter" for all possible preamps and ADDA converter, which themselves have no USB CC mode to be connected to IOS devices or Linux.
And that would include not only RME devices, but also others.
Which would basically lead to even more potential buyers.

So lets hear whether RME likes that idea or whether it could be possible to implement now or for a later generation of Digiface USB, if the FPGA should be full ...

Re: Why is it so hard to accept linux?

I fully agree.
Although I am more into Madi than Adat.

Probably the number of Linux users is still too small to be considerated. Moreover Linux has still the image of some nerdy playful stuff - which is not appropriate. Instead, Linux systems are highly optimizable for a specific task, whereas macOS and Windows systems are unpredictably busy with several background tasks and with every update it becomes more and more difficult for the user to keep control. It is no wonder that users nowadays suggest the latest laptop models to record 20+ channels with macOS, but for that task a Raspberry Pi is actually sufficient.

See also this thread with a proposal from my side to solve the issue (comment from RME) that the device has no knob to switch between the two modes. IMHO a connection between two ports might be avaluated as a logical "0" or "1", on / off, CC mode or not.

I am actually thinking with how many coffees we can convince the RME development team to make cc mode available for the Madiface usb. wink

Re: Why is it so hard to accept linux?

I would love to see official Linux driver for Babyface & Fireface.

@RME please just create a funding campaign and post it into the linux threads on your forum, they have 70k & 100k views, there will be massive support from the Linux community if you do something like this:

The donation campaign stopped at 2500 Australian Dollar wich is less than 1500 EUR, how much driver programming is to expect from a German Engineer for this amount ?

M1-Sequoia, Madiface Pro, Digiface USB, Babyface silver and blue

You got it wrong. The donation campaign got completed, not stopped, and the last bit donated Focusrite themselves. As far as I know Geoffrey Bennett is based in Australia and he intended to use raised funds for the hardware only, as he does the work itself for free.

Link to the campaign was posted as an example. Actually not quite fortunate one, because as mentioned above, it did not fund the development, but the testing hardware only.

Re: Why is it so hard to accept linux?

Hehe, it looks competition is getting ahead of RME. smile
https://github.com/geoffreybennett/alsa-scarlett-gui

Now with stack (bottom to top):
ALSA / Pipewire / Wireplumber / qPwGraph / Ardour

everything seems to work flawleslly. I even ditched Bitwig for Ardour which I find even more intuitive.
This channell is really fun to watch and gives a soft introduction to Linux audio:

I am not going back to Bitwig. For now I will buy Clarett+ 8Pre and hope for RME to come to senses.
