Topic: Issue with Digiface USB and Ferrofish Pulse 16 at 44khz

Software: Cakewalk Sonar
OS: Windows 7
Digiface USB/Ferrofish Pulse 16

I'm a complete newbie to the forum, and to the Digiface and Ferrofish.  Most of my projects are recorded at 96/24, but I do work occasionally with 44/24 legacy projects from other musicians.  I am having an issue where, at 44kHz, I am only getting the right channel from Sonar's master bus.

At 96kHz, everything seems to work as expected, I get stereo output from Sonar's master bus sent to the Ferrofish's hardware outputs 15 and 16, which connect to my powered speakers.  But at 44kHz, I only hear audio in the right speaker.  The Ferrofish shows stereo output on channels 31/32 (hardware channel 16), but I only hear output in the right speaker.  I have headphones connected to the Digiface headphone out, and I hear both channels in the headphones.

If I switch back to a 96kHz project, everything works as expected, but switching back to the 44kHz project it does not, still no output in the left speaker.  I have been to the matrix view in TotalMix, everything seems set up correctly there.

What am I missing?  this has to be some sort of virtual to physical routing issue, but I cannot find anything out of place.

Thanks in advance for reading, and for sharing any input that you might have.

Flip the cables of the speakers at the Ferrofish sockets to sort out a speaker issue.
Use output 1/2 at the Ferrofish for a test.

Re: Issue with Digiface USB and Ferrofish Pulse 16 at 44khz

I am pretty confident it is not a speaker issue, as both speakers work fine at 96kHz.  The left speaker does not work only if the Digiface/Ferrorfish are running at 44/88kHz.  So as long as the software output maps to the physical output, everything works as expected.  Only when the software outputs map to a virtual output does the left speaker remain silent.

I'll try using ports one and two on the Ferrofish shortly.

What do you mean with virtual outputs ? The hardware outputs in Totalmix are all going to real outputs.

Sounds like the Ferrofish stays at 96 khz and you need to manually switch it to 44.1 kHz.

I don’t know how the Ferrofish exactly works, but I suspect a wrong channel routing on this unit related to ADAT single speed vs double speed (SMUX).

Thank you, MC, that was the answer.  The Ferrofish was actually at 88, when I forced it to 44.1 everything started behaving.  And this also clears up my fundamental misunderstanding of how this setup is working....there are NO outputs 17-32.  Based on the behavior I was seeing, I was assuming there were virtual outputs mapped between the Ferrofish and the Digiface, but there are no such things....my outputs end at 16.  Sonar sees 32 outputs, but they have to be mapped via TotalMix to the 16 physical Ferrofish output ports.

Thanks everyone for their input!

This was also a correct answer, but MC's answer was more specific, and led me straight to the solution.
