Topic: MIDI via MADI - MIDI port not available with USB driver on UFX+

Hello, since I switched from the Thunderbolt driver to the USB driver with my UFX+, the MIDI port "UFX+ MADI Optical" no longer exists in my system.

Have I overlooked something? The port should actually be there, right?
Is this only the case for me?

Firmware and driver are up to date.

I think it never should been there, Midi-over-Madi is not a real Midi.
It is a special RME-only remote protocol.

Re: MIDI via MADI - MIDI port not available with USB driver on UFX+

From your manual:

MIDI, MIDI over MADI
lich.

 1 x MIDI über MADI I/O
 Unsichtbare Übertragung per User Bit des Kanals 56 (bis 48 kHz)
 Unsichtbare Übertragung per User Bit des Kanals 28 (96k Frame)

3. Systemvoraussetzungen
 Windows 7 oder höher, Intel Mac OS X (10.6 oder höher)
 1 x ThunderboltTM oder USB 3.0 Port, oder
1 x USB 2.0 Port (reduzierte Anzahl an Audiokanälen – keine MADI Aufnahme/Wiedergabe)
 Für USB: Computer mit mindestens Intel Core i3 CPU

I have no UFX+, but putting this together, i would say: USB Driver via USB2 Cable = no MADI = no MIDI over MADI

Anyhow, you could try this:
15.1 MIDI funktioniert nicht
In einigen Fällen erscheint in der Anwendungssoftware kein MIDI-Port. Der Grund zeigt sich nor-
malerweise in der Audio-MIDI Konfiguration. Dort ist entweder gar kein MIDI-Gerät vorhanden,
oder das vorhandene ist ausgegraut. In den meisten Fällen reicht es aus, das ausgegraute Gerät
zu entfernen (also zu löschen), und neu suchen zu lassen.

Midi over MADI is real Midi. You can use it for any purpose. You can control software synths with Midi over MADI as well. Not only RME devices.

Sometimes the driver shows UFX+ Midi port 1-4. There is the Midi Port 3, the optical port and the Coaxial port 4.

Download Midi tools https://mountainutilities.eu/miditools, loopback (Madi in to Madi out) and start testing.

Re: MIDI via MADI - MIDI port not available with USB driver on UFX+

Thank you for your answers.

Midi via MADI is definitely real Midi. So far I have been able to access the hardware midi connections of my ADI-648. The ports were also there as described in the manual, until the change.
Since switching to the USB driver, however, I only have the two hardware midi inputs and outputs from the UFX+ available. In the Audio Midi setup, only the two inputs and outputs are displayed.
I also use the correct cable, MADI itself works with all 64 (128) channels.

Re: MIDI via MADI - MIDI port not available with USB driver on UFX+

Ok...
The ports are back when I run the UFX at home.

I have to explain the situation.
When I rehearse with my band, the UFX+ is connected via Madi to a rack with mic splitter, preamps and converters. The Madi connection is established via an ADI-648, whose midi out I use to supply my keyboardist with midi clock. This has always worked with Thunderbolt drivers.
The UFX+ is in a 2U rack bag together with the Mac mini, which I take home with me afterwards.
I don't use Madi at home, only the analog in and outs, so I haven't even thought of looking for the Madi midi ports there yet...

During the rehearsal I have another USB midi device on the computer, which I now strongly suspect is causing the error.

I will test it and report back.
