Topic: Total Mix - Reboot / BSOD when enabled

Greetings,

I am having issues with my computer (Win 11 Pro, X570 AORUS ELITE WIFI, AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 64 GB) rebooting for a variety of "reasons" (per Win DBG). It does not specifically call out Total Mix.

However, if I disable Total Mix and the Fireface Settings service in Task Manager, it does not reboot. Most of the time I am not using it when it reboots. I could just log into it, leave it (Total Mix / Fireface are both startup programs) and it will eventually BSOD/reboot.

BIOS / MOBO are up to date.

REM USB firmware is 49. Win Driver is 1251.

1st thing before making changes to your system:
- Document BIOS Settings
- Make a reliable Backup of your system; IMHO the best backup program is Macrium Reflect Home.

I would propose to upgrade the mainboard BIOS and to look for special tuned DRAM timings. Better use the default timings.
I would deactivate not-used devices in the BIOS.

Then I would get a 2nd disk for a clean Windows installation.
Propose to use Rufus to create a boot image without the performance sucking Win11 kern isolation.
By this you can also leave out all the requirements for secure boot, tpm and online account.
To get rid of online account you should disconnect network during installation, additionally.

After Win11 installation install only the really required drivers and nothing more.
No update or other additional tools from the mainboard vendor.

Only stuff like:
- chipset driver (Intel or AMD)
- usb or network 3rd party drivers
- for the time being use the nVidia or AMD display driver as bundled with Win11

If you need network, LAN preferred, leave out Wireless for a moment, deactivate it if possible.

Check in your BIOS whether you use unusual settings. Some people use special timiings for their RAM.
Stick to the defaults here.

Make a disk image directly after installation and after driver installation, so that you can come back to that point at any time.
A good program for backup purposes is Macrium Reflect.

Finally install RME drivers.

RME drivers are very stable and well coded.
If there are such issues then I am pretty certain that there is something wrong on your system.
Either Hardware / BIOS or Windows related.
The question is what.

Therefore the proposal to use the latest BIOS, what the support guy of your mainboard most likely will tell you.
Then BIOS default settings and a review what needs to be changed for a recording system.
Disable C-States, C1N .. "the usual things to disable energy saving which has bad impact on DPC latency of your system".
And a vanilla installation and not installing any "crappy" tools from mainboard vendor or elsewhere which could impact the installation.

And .. b4 I forget to tell .. after new installation of OS and after every driver installation check with LatencyMon,
whether the DPC lacencies stay around the same on on IDLE system or whether they become significantly worse.
On top of your other BSOD problem you might install then a bad driver which might occupy CPU cores for too long.

@ectobass You have not mentioned, what CPU is in your system. Certain Intel models (all K and few others) of 13th and 14th generation often tend to crash. :-(

I would correct a bit the article concerning AMD CPUs.

Yes, there was problem with too high voltage on CPU core. But, it was not the whole 7000 CPU family. Affected were only 3D CPUs. And only on motherboards of Asus, as far as I know . And problem was not primarily in CPU microcode, but in wrong settings that Asus used in its motherboards.... But yes, AMD later on has also improved CPU microcode to keep voltage in safe margins even if MB tries to set it wrongly...

So the case is quite different from Intel's one.

But yes, if OP has AMD 7xxx 3D CPU and motherboard from Asus and old BIOS, computer instability might be also due to those conditions.

I mourn the old Xeons. Something like this now in new, affordable, reasonable performance and a server or workstation mainboard without "bling bling", not plastered with M.2, but with enough PCIe expansion sockets.
Extremely solidly designed systems. You simply fill them up with cards and it works.

M.2 is handy for SSDs. AMD has released few consumer grade Epyc CPUs, that are server focused otherwise. I am not sure if they have more PCIes and more RAM than Ryzens... Probably not as they fit into AM5 socket, but MB will be cheaper than that for enterprice Epycs.

M.2 you could also mount onto PCIe cards or simply use a NVMe card.
Then you have still enough PCIe sockets, just in case that you need them.
I saw mainboards which support up to four M.2 and for that purpose, they sacrificed many PCIe sockets.
I do not like this concept.
They should have invented something to connect M.2 cards on the case and then a cable to connect PCIe lanes to there.

Thank you all very much. I am still working through the replies. I have not had any time to mess with it lately. I was thinking it was something system / windows related. 


Here is more system info. I have actually been battling this for quite awhile, but again, due to limited time I only mess with it every other month or so.

I don't mess with voltages or try to overclock anything. 


If there are specific BIOS settings that are a concern, please let me know. I'm not afraid of getting in there, but not something I do on a regular basis.


Radeon Pro WX 4100 video card


I try to run a clean machine in that I don't have any bloatware, no MS Office. I also limit what starts up when I boot the machine. 


I disabled all the other default audio devices and also made sure all the USB and power settings cannot be turned off by the system. 


I do use the internet on the machine periodically. But can disable that as necessary. Anything with browsers that would be a concern? I hate that you cannot get rid of MS Edge.

To clear up any doubts from the beginning, TotalMix is not the cause of Reboot/BSOD on your computer. This is what I would do:

X570 AORUS ELITE WIFI (rev. 1.x) BIOS F39

With the Gigabyte User Manual in front of you I would reset BIOS to default and on page 23 it explains how to extract BAT and do Clear CMOS. After this and from now on do NOT change anything in BIOS, all default and do NOT activate XPM (DRAM at JEDEC, possibly 2133MT/s).

64 GB Ram G.Skill Ripjaw V-Series SDRAM DDR4 3200

There isn't any G.Skill 64GB 3200MT/s kit listed on your motherboard's QVL, IMO the main source of stability issues and this is the reason why I mentioned before not enabling XMP. MemTest86 (by PassMark) is a very useful tool to test your DRAM kit, easy to use (with a little bit of patience) and with official forum support to get help and understand the errors found. Don't rule out purchasing a new DRAM kit.

AMD Chipset Driver 5.11.02.217

I would not install the Chipset Drivers offered by motherboard manufacturers, only those downloaded from the official AMD website for X570, more reliable and always the latest versions.

Radeon Pro WX 4100 video card

Same case than Chipset, driver only from AMD.


If all of the above has not been helpful, I would consider a clean installation of Windows with technical support from AMD and Gigabyte, possible 3600 or X570 faulty ....

Whether we agree or not, PC users should learn to maintain our computers or pay Professionals to do so wink
