Topic: Fireface 400/Windows 10 22H2 issues

Hello,
A friend lent me a fireface 400 so that I can try it before buying it. He uses Mac and the FF works perfectly on his home.
However, I am having difficulties on Windows 10 22H2.
Installing the latest drivers available from the RME website and updating the firmware seems to work, but:
-Windows media player or Spotify app playback is not possible. Same with Youtube. The red light comes on when I start playback. I think I have configured the WDM devices correctly, but maybe I missed something.
-In Ableton 9 I can see the AsioFireface driver, but Ableton tells me cannot access audio device.

However, when I am not using Ableton, or any playback application like windows media player, the signals coming into the FF are visible in TotalMix, and the routing works.

The FF is externaly powered,
All other audio devices are disabled,
I installed this PCIe firewire card and tried the supplied drivers and also with the legacy drivers:

I have read a lot of topics on the forum, I tried the installation several times, tested different settings in the FF settings, the same in the Windows audio settings when it comes to WDM, but I can't solve these problems.
I currently need help, I don't know if it's a configuration problem, a driver problem, a PCIe card problem, or if I am the problem wink
Thanks for your reading and your time,
And sorry if there are any English mistakes, I use Google Translate

How did you find out the routing works ?
What routing have you done ?
Is the signal visible in the software playback 1/2 ?

I think you simply forgot to configure the speaker device (see WDM settings) as default audio playback device in Windows sound settings.

The device works with ASIO, so driver wise all is ok.

And all non-working applications are applications that do not support ASIO .. so they need the WDM driver ...
You configured it in the RME driver but you didn't activate it for Windows Sound, that it will be used as default playback device.

Re: Fireface 400/Windows 10 22H2 issues

Thanks for the quick answer!

When I was talking about routing, I meant for example, I connected my electronic drums to the AN7/8 inputs, and I was able to route this signal to the desired outputs without any problem: main, headphones...
Routing from a DAW or a playback application does not work: the red light on the FF lights up and the signal does not enter the Total Mix software playback inputs.

Sorry if I expressed myself badly about routing, the right word might have been mixing

Re: Fireface 400/Windows 10 22H2 issues

No signal in the software playback channels, nothing to route.
Follow what Ramses told you in post 3.

You created a new type of TM FX channel..

Maybe I understood you wrong or read wrong, I though you see already audio signals / metering in TM FX.

Do you see the FF400 in device manager?

If I remember right, Win10 needs one additional step, as it supports per default no FireWire anymore.
Did you install for Windows the FireWire legacy driver?

I tried to get the URL for you, but didn't find the URL quickly .. you may need to search for it.

Re: Fireface 400/Windows 10 22H2 issues

Thanks Guys.
I did not forget to configure the speaker device as default audio playback device in the audio settings of Windows.
The player cannot even start reading and stops, the FF red light comes on, and of course no signal arrives in TotalMix software playback channel.
I would like to show you screenshots but I can't seem to insert them.

I see the FF400 in device manager.
I see audio signals in TotalMix hardware imputs when i play my E-drums.
I installed the Windows FireWire Legacy driver.

I think I understand the differences between WDM and ASIO.
I also have a problem with Ableton which manages ASIO.
When I want to choose the ASIO Fireface driver, Ableton see it but can't connect to the FF.

In summary, for now I can use the FF and TotalMix only as a mixing desk for physical inputs and outputs.

This all seems strange to me.
Thanks again

Re: Fireface 400/Windows 10 22H2 issues

Red LED means the FW connection is interrupted as soon as you try to start playback. Have you tried another cable? Can you try another power supply? Also make sure the power source selector is in the correct position. Does it make any difference if you reduce bandwidth in the FF settings, e.g. to 8 channels?
Make sure not to install any proprietary drivers for the FW card.

Thank you,

Legacy driver is inatalled.
There is no difference when i reduce bandwidth in FF settings.
The power source selector is in the correct position.

For now, I don't have others cables and power supply, but i'll try as soon as possible and let you know.

Thanks again.

If possible, try another FireWire card as well.
