Meanwhile, I have started to delete all standard routings (prepared by the factory) and really only set up those that are needed.
This also makes it much clearer which routings you only require.
And the TotalMix signal flow is not difficult at all.
Audio from the inputs is passed on unchanged to the DAW. Audio from the DAW is not immediately sent to the outputs, but first to a kind of patch bay, the middle row, SW playbacks, audio from the PC.
And now you have the unique option in TotalMix FX of being able to create a separate submix for each individual output.
This is very useful for monitoring, so you can create an ideal submix for each musician by making certain instrument groups louder or quieter.
You can also create your own submix in parallel to mixing in the DAW and record it via loopback. I do this, for example, when overdubbing guitar on backing tracks. I turn my guitar up a little on the headphone output and set the volume of the guitar to a level that fits better into the mix for loopback recording. Then you have a recording that you can quickly pass on.
I would like to encourage you not to get confused by all the terminology. Once you have grasped the few basic features of TotalMix, it is easy and convenient to adapt the routing for monitoring or the connection of external FX to your needs.
