Topic: DURec Question--had some issues recently with recording dropping

Hi All

I suspect the issue here is my laptop but I will clarify first my setup.

RME Fireface UCX II
UBS3.0 SSD drive in a powered enclosure, formatted correctly to FAT 32. Connected by USB 3.0 Type A connector cable to DURec port of UCX II

Interfaces for running TotalMix: Laptop A (used successfully), Laptop B (just set up, spare laptop I have), and iPad Pro (maybe 2 years old--have correctly used it with UCX II in Class Compliant mode and a small USB hub, no issues at all).

I essentially want this as a standalone recording setup, but I like using TotalMix to start/stop recording and set levels etc. This was the only reason I have used my laptops. I later take the WAV files into my DAW on my desktop.

I successfully recorded a jam session with about 11 inputs about 2 weeks ago. I used "Laptop A" to run TotalMix. I cannot recall if the UCX II was in CC (Class Compliant mode) or not, but I did have the USB driver running.

Yesterday, I used a different laptop--a gaming laptop from a few years back, and had just installed latest UCX USB Driver.

I added a few tracks--12 inputs this time (one more than before).

I started the recording and it should just keep running . . . like it did last time. We're talking about 3-4 hours. However, it dropped out a few times and we didn't get the full session.

Any idea why this happened?

Should I just run this with iPad Pro and UCX II in CC mode?

Is it perhaps a drive issue?

Note: I have yet to update the UCX II firmware--was always in a rush before so I will try to do this today.

What means 'dropped out'? Did you check the USB load and Max R/W time on the Record/Playback page?

In CC mode TM FX is not available on the computer.

Manual page 107 gives tips on how to verify performance of the record medium.

DURec does not stop by itself, even if the computer is switched off. Unless a sample rate change occurs, then a stop is inevitable.

Dropped out--I mean 'stopped in error' and I had an error message which said recording stopped.

USB load looked fine--but I will check against page 107, thank you.

I forgot to mention I am running Windows 11.

I assume ADAT clock sync issues would not cause this problem?

Normally not. Unless the sample rate identified changes extremely, maybe. But that would be a total not working state anyway.

Running at 48khz, and pretty sure nothing changed.

Would problems on the laptop affect DURec if TotalMix is running and say 'something happens' (like a Windows update resets the computer)--or does DURec keep running?

If it might be a laptop issue, I will test it in CC mode with the iPad Pro this coming week and with the other laptop (one that worked fine before).

I will also buy a USB stick (and I will check the sticky thread on which ones work well) as a means of testing this/using other recording media.

Hello

If you want to give your USB stick one last chance, format it via Diskpart using the clean option and create a new partition no larger than 32768Mb via Windows Disk Management. If you haven't modified anything 11 vs 12 tracks this IMHO may the error source.

Good luck

If the computer restarts Windows might change the sample rate on boot, and the driver (which remembers) might change it back. So yes, that would be a reason to stop.
