Topic: Use TotalMix with Antelope Orion 32+

Hi,
I would like to know if it's possible to use TotalMIx with the Orion 32+ convertor using a madiface.
I would like to mainly use it for making monitor mixes to send to the live room for musicians to be able to make their own balance.
Im on a Mac Studio M2 Ultra running Sonoma, and working in Cubase 13.
Any help is very much appreciated.
Cheers,
Sebastian

Re: Use TotalMix with Antelope Orion 32+

Hi Sebastian, welcome to the RME forum.

The Orion is no converter, but the recording interface should be useable as a converter if you route all analog I/O via MADI.
This could be achieved by keeping it connected via USB3 with installed driver / DSP mixer simply for operation.
In the DAW you can load the RME driver.
Maybe it also supports stand-alone operation, check the manual, then you wouldn't need the USB3 connection once you have the unit configured. Try it out, should work, I see no reason why not.

Just for completeness of information, which MADIface do you mean? MADIface XT II or MADIface USB?
Both should work.
Alternatives: UFX III
And if you have an external thunderbolt housing for your Mac: HDSPe MADI FX, HDSPe MADI

Thanks Ramses, you the man!

Would you say madi or dante?

@ramses
I was looking at these two devices by the way:

- RME Digiface Dante
- RME Madiface USB

Re: Use TotalMix with Antelope Orion 32+

I would only consider network-based setups (Dante or AVB) if you are mainly working with one fix sample rate. With MADI, the clock slaves usually follow the clock of the master automatically. Unfortunately, this is not the case with network-based setups. Here, each device or stream must be reconfigured if there is a change in the sample rate. There was already a thread about this in the forum.

See also comment RME: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.ph … 89#p195989

AVB then also has the requirement for an AVB-compatible switch. Dante costs extra because of the Audinate chip, and you have to set up Quality of Service on your switches, possibly also routers if you have to route between different VLANs.

With MADI, you don't have this additional operational effort when changing the sample rate and all the additional requirements. MADI is then also definitely dedicated for audio.

If you need several MADI buses for any reason, then take a look at HDSPe MADI FX and MADIface XT II.

If you are also interested in Room EQ, the following interfaces with MADI support may be of interest to you:

USB3 based: UFX III, MADIface XT II
PCIe based: newer versions of the HDSPe MADI FX

MADIface USB (2.0) is also possible: one MADI bus, no Room EQ

I also thought, but didn't find the thread in the forum.
AFAIR there were two threads about Room EQ.
But in these two I only see references to a) UFX* and UCX II and b) 802 FS and HDSPe MADI FX.
Maybe I overlooked something.

Who needs a thread when it's stated in the product's web page?

I think there was an announcement in the forum, and I thought it had been descoped when I didn't see it anymore.
I skimmed the product page and missed it. Finally found it with Firefox after reading it again after your posting.
