Topic: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

Hello RME community,

I hope you are all doing well.

RME UFX Usb input doesn't work. I tried different USB cables and different computers it's just not recognized by the device.

Anyone might have an idea what could be the problem?

Best,
Pavle

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

Hi Pavle
Please more details, at moment it's unclear what the issue is.
What computer, what OS ?
Wich driver version is installed, can you tell the firmware number in the interface ?
Is the Fireface settings dialog opening ?
Is Totalmix opening ?

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

Hello,

Thank you for your answer.

OS: Windows 11
Driver: Latest USB driver for Windows - Driver version 1.250

I don't know where to find firmware number in the interface.

Fireface settings dialog is not opening.

Totalmix can be opened, but it says disconnected.

The device is just not recognized. On the interface where it shows USB state the light is off.

Physical USB input on the device seems like it's not working.

Any idea how this can be solved?

Best,
Pavle

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

USB is not an "input", it's a data connection. Does Windows show any new USB device in the device manager when you connect? Can you try another cable or test with another computer?

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

It doesn't show new USB device.

I tried different cables and different computers.

I suspect that it's about hardware.

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

The official page for the UFX (legacy product driver archiv)
shows this : Windows 7 to 10 PnP driver for Fireface UFX, 802, UCX, UC and Babyface/Pro, version 1.168.
unfortunately it is not mentioned as up to win 11, may be because win 11 was not out then,
I would try the 1.168 driver

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

The UFX is no longer in production, but of course it works with the latest driver, no need to install an old one. This is misleading.

Check if the device is in Class Compliant mode (see manual).

Used old unit? Power supply defective or RAM/DSP error. Most probably needs repair.

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

It seems like the problem is with a USB microchip that is inside the unit.

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

And have you tried different computer? Or at least different USB sockets on computer?

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

The UFX is a great interface, worth for repair, I would send in for repair, they can check psu and dsp and USB chip.

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

We replaced the USB microchip and it still doesn't work. I don't know what is the problem, apparently maybe there's no hope for this unit to work again.

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

Who is we ?

The official RME service partner should repair this.

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

Well we don’t have an official RME service in my country so I brought the unit to the electronics service.

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

I was told that the price of repair might be nearly as the price of the unit - since I have RME UFX which is an discontinued unit.

By the way, I just realized that I might damage it by connecting it to a remote USB hub, not directly on the computer motherboard.

So probably some issue with electricity happened and that's it.

What do you mean by a remote USB hub? Or do you simply mean by connecting it to a USB hub?

The connection to a USB hub is not excluded.
Especially in the Apple area (Laptops with only few USB ports) USB hubs are being used often.

There are other reasons why you would like to have only the recording interface alone behind a USB controller, so that the USB controller only has to handle the data of the recording interface.

Yes, I mean connecting to a USB hub and not directly to the computer.

I think that produced static electricity or something that destroyed the interface.

I don't think so. Otherwise, you would hear much more of such cases.

The only thing which I remember are issues with FW400. When plugging and unplugging, the plugs may become slightly ‘twisted’ and the contacts with power may come into contact with the electronics, damaging them. This is why it is recommended to switch off the FireWire 400 devices first before plugging (although FW400 is actually supposed to be hot pluggable).

For the sake of completeness, this is a Fw400-specific problem, not an RME problem.

I am not aware of anything like this with USB.

Then what is it? How did my USB connection just suddenly stopped working out of nowhere?

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

I have a cheap audio interface Steinberg UR22 which is around 10 years old and it is still working normally, and yet high end interface like RME UFX doesn't work anymore, that's what I don't understand.

Re: RME UFX USB 2.0 Input doesn't work

I am not quite sure why we have to read 20 posts so far to go back to square one: the USB input is defective, your repair attempt did not work, so send the unit in for repair.

Any further post here will not help.

Ha-ha, well I'm crying around cause I was told that the repair might cost as much as the entire value of the unit.
