I don't think so. Otherwise, you would hear much more of such cases.
The only thing which I remember are issues with FW400. When plugging and unplugging, the plugs may become slightly ‘twisted’ and the contacts with power may come into contact with the electronics, damaging them. This is why it is recommended to switch off the FireWire 400 devices first before plugging (although FW400 is actually supposed to be hot pluggable).
For the sake of completeness, this is a Fw400-specific problem, not an RME problem.
I am not aware of anything like this with USB.
