Topic: Connecting UCX II to ADI-2 DAC fs

Hello RME forum

I have researched this but can't seem to find out if the following is possible?

Can I digitally send the main out from the UCXII to my ADI-2 DAC fs without using the ADAT I/O ports of the UCXII?

Can i use the breakout cable and how?

The reason I'm asking is because I want to use the ADAT I/O for other tasks, such as expanding my I/O in the future, but if I have to use the ADAT for the ADI-2 Dac fs out i loose this possibility.

Sure, you can use the coaxial SPDIF output (RCA, Cinch...) from the breakout cable. Use Assign to make that output the Mains Out in TM FX.

Okay thanks. Do I only use the red or the white one then? I can’t use both.

And can I use the ADAT I/O independently from the coaxial spdif also?

Does anybody know which cables are ins and which ones are outs in the breakout cable?

[ Edited after reading the response in #6: it turned out, that all questions were related to UCX II ]

Manual ch 21.3: you can use UCX II's digital I/O ports (AES, ADAT - switchable to optical SPDIF-, coax. SPDIF)
independent of each other.

Which means
- that all channels can carry a different audio signal and
- in terms of TM FX and routing: each digital output can have an individual submix like any other output.

SPDIF is a 2ch protocol, indeed you only need one SPDIF cable. So you have a 50 percent chance of getting it right first time.
If it doesn't work, well, then simply try the other plug of the breakout cable, it won't break anything.

According to another product's manual (HDSPe 9632) red is output, ch 6.1. I would assume that RME uses this schema for all products, should be documented in the UCX II manual, although it's effortless to find it out yourself.

Recommendation: you should read your manuals a little to learn about your device's capabilities. They are real gems. At least browse through the manuals, they are well-structured. Then you learn about the structure and what information you can expect from it.

Thank you for your thorough answer - much appreciated!

I did read though it, I'm just a little green in regards to all these connection types, so I cant seem to wrap my head around what I read. haha. But I'm beginning to understand now, thanks!

Yeah this sounds great, I also saw this. But does "independently" mean that they all stream the same audio signal that can be utilized by 3 different devices at the same time, or can I use the RCA spdif going to the ADI-2 dac for main out monitoring while using the UCXII ADAT optical in + out for 8 additional ins and outs for external hardware effects via another AD/DA converter ala Ferrofish 16? Meaning RCA spdif streaming main L/R out while ADAT optical is streaming 8 other channels? Does it make sense?

I wasnt clear here, but I meant on the UCXII, not the DAC smile

Thank you so much

Independently means independently. It wouldn't be that if all three outputs had the same signal.

Thank you. The manual actually doesn’t say independently, it says simultaneously.

From the manual:
“21.3 SPDIF (Coaxial, Optical)
The Fireface UCX Il has up to three SPDIF inputs and outputs: coaxial, optical and AES can be used simultaneously, with different audio signals. Note that the sources have to be synchronous, as the unit does not have a dedicated sample rate converter.”

It says simultaneously with different audio signals. But what does synchronous mean?

Thank you

It is simply a friendly reminder that digitally connected devices must be clock synchronised.
