Topic: Updating FW on a QEMU/KVM-virtualized Windows 11 worked

Hi all,
anyone had the guts to try it?

For me it worked. Tried only my trusty old 1st-gen Babyface, which I don't really need at the moment, but it seems like the whole thing worked just fine - well at least redirecting physical USB device in KVM hypervisor config, the guest OS (non-activated Win11 for free) did recognize it, installed RME driver, FUT, TotalMix, DigiCheck... seemed fine before and after the update too, even TM popped up when I virtually plugged the USB in from host to guest. Didn't measure the latency, but that wasn't my point anyway, only updating firmware. On a non-virtualized Windows all seemed fine afterwards. Then back to CC on Linux I'm all happy too.

Was wondering if such a FW update worked for anyone else, possibly with non-USB devices.

Do you use USB pass-through for the RME interface to the Windows VM?
How does it work for low latency usage in a DAW?

Thinking of going Linux as base OS.
I would also run either VMware Workstation (since I also got USB audio interface it should be able to be pass-throughed).
Or KVM/QEMU.

Since I use Cubase I could run it inside a Windows VM if the low latency part works....

Yes.

Didn't measure, my point was only updating the firmware. Then I switched back to CC in Linux.

Hopefully. Please try and let us know.

I tried with my UCX  II with KVM/QEMU with USB pass-through of the device, TotalMix works flawlessly and even the firmware update was successful, without bricking my device. With USB redirection it doesn't work.
I tried playing back a youtube video and the audio had no glitches. I'm not sure if one could use this for low latency audio, but at least for updating the firmware it's a viable solution.
