Please Help, lots of trouble with latest DK (4.17) and KExt (3.33) drivers

Hi, I'm running on a MacBook Pro (16", 2019) on Big Sur 11.7.10, using a Fireface UCX connected (directly to the MBP, not through hub) in USB, with nothing else on it but a 48v-powered mike and a guitar. UCX outs are directly connected to my studio monitors.

So far I was running quite fine w/ a firmware update that was dating back in 2019 (installed w/ RME USB Series Flash Tool v1.68) and with the Kernel Extension driver v3.19.

Today I:
- First, upgraded the firmware to v49
- Then, tried to install DriverKit v4.17 - which based on install "Read me", is supposed to uninstall existing former K. Ext. (see issues I encountered below)
- Then, tried to install K. Ext. v3.33 - which based on install "Read me", is supposed to uninstall the DriverKit extension (see issues I encountered below)
- Then, tried again several times to re-install either of them on top of my system (running the Fireface USB DK 417.pkg or the Fireface USB 333.pkg file), which switches what driver Fireface USB Settings is reporting when I launch it.

At each stage, the Fireface USB Settings app was reporting the correct version of firmware (49) and of driver (either 4.17 or 3.33). Besides, TotalMix FX was updated to 1.97 upon the very first driver install above.

I get the following issues.

For the first couple of minutes after reboot, all seems file, though the MBP fans run fairly hard upon startup and after.

After 2-3 minutes issues pile up.

Common to DK 4.17 and K.Ext. 3.33
- Total Mix FX starts blinking slightly, as if display of its window was slightly unstable
- Sound out cuts suddenly, and audio out switches to another hardware
- All the system (inclus Finder, system prefs), Apps (all open ones), reaction time to mouse or keyboard actions, gets very sluggish (maybe a little less so with DK 4.17 but still quite, and definitely extremely sluggish w/ KExt 3.33)
- In my DAW (Logic Pro X 10.4.8) audio in gets chopped (sounds like a lot of jitter)

Specific to DK 4.17
- In system prefs/sound, Sound Out display of Fireface UCX stays stable, but in the Sound In pane, the Fireface UCX blinks in & out repeatedly, every few seconds

Specific to KExt 3.33
- In system prefs, when I try  to access the Sound tab, I  get "Preferences Error - Cannot load the Sound preferences window"
- In Logic, can't find any input but Input 1

Once I reach this point, the only way for me to get back to a useable computer (no sluggishness, at least), is to turn it off, disconnect the USB cord of the Fireface UCX, and restart. In other words, my Fireface UCX is now totally useless and I cannot work in my music studio since I no longer have an audio interface up and running.


MY MOST URGENT NEED:
- How can I uninstall both DK 4.17 and all RME KExt that might sit on my system, as well as TotalMix FX, and install back my former KExt driver and version of TotalMix FX which were working just fine (I still have the 2019 install package on my hard drive) ?

Nice to have, but less urgent:
- What should I do to solve the above and run either of the most-up-to-date of DK or KExt driver + version of TotalMix FX flawlessly?

You may check if Microphone access in the MacOS system preferences / Security and Privacy is enabled for Logic.
For the installation of the Kext driver you may have to disable SIP.
That's what I would try : Disable SIP correctly, then install DK 417, restart computer.
When everything works, you can re-enable SIP.

Hello there,
Just bought a Digiface USB.
Unable to install it on Mac Mini M2 Pro with Sequoia. Install seems to work well, but no "driver" loaded. Looked at some posts here about ktext file. No Ktext file founded.
Able to install it on Macbook Pro with Monterey. I updated the card to v18 there.

Tried to reinstalled several times with no luck. The RME extension is allowed in the extensions.

I am surprised to see terminal commands in a RME forum ... Coming from old multiface it was always rock solid but here I have to admit that I am surprised.

Any help welcome. Thanks in advance.

Driver 417 is what I would install...

And also check :
MacOS : System preferences / General / Startup items and extensions
scroll down to driver extensions and click the littke i-icon right side.
It may reveal a switch to enable the driver...

I used the 417 but I was not aware of that little -i-con right side. RME was there, just a click and the card is endly detected. You saved my day!

Your post should be pinned because I think many other users may be stucked like me in the near future!!!!

This happens with new computers with new installations. Some people buy a new Mac and let migration copy the old computer into the new including all drivers.
It is unclear (to me) why some users with new installation has to enable the driver there and others don't.

It is a fresh install. Just that the RME explanations were not so clear as yours. In fact, they even dont talk about that little click to do  at that specific place.

Because Apple invented this in one of the last MacOS upgrades not long ago.

Hello, I've updated my Mac (M1) to Sequoia and my Fireface UCX stopped being recognised. It has latest flash update, and I installed the latest driver (4.17). After reboot I see an error that system kit extension forbidden by system policy.
I also don't see 'Allow' button in my mac's security settings (I guess as I clicked it when I was installing the previous drivers)

I don't want to modify security settings, so I'd like to go with DriverKit driver. Is there a way to make it work?

I saw this post - I don't have 'drivers' section there, I have a section called 'Extensions' at the bottom of this screen, which bunch of items, such as Actions, Finder, etc. But I don't see any references to RME there.

Before the reboot for finishing the driver installation open System Preferences, General, Login Items & Extensions "Allow in the Background" click the switch to allow the RME GmbH extension.

Install the dk driver again. It should finally look like this:

You're sure the UCX is connected via USB (not FireWire)?

It is connected via USB and it worked fine until I updated my mac os to Sequoia.
I just tried to uninstall the driver and install it again - same story. I have this 'Error loading RME USB
DriverKit extension - Forbidden By System Policy' message at the end of the driver installation. Fireface USB Settings app launches, but when I launch Total Mix I don't see its UI at all however the nav bar says that total mix is running, and Fireface is not recognised by the system

My laptop has some anti-malware software installed, could it be the reason?

Possible, but without knowing further details, hard to say, what the cause is...

Lets do a step by step maybe...

1) 100% Sure you downloaded and install the 4.17 Driverkit driver?

1.1) Make sure "App Store and identified developers" are allowed in Security Settings:

1.2.) Start the DK Installer again.

1.3.) Before finishing/exiting/rebooting (after) the DK installer, go to the Privacy Settings again (see 1.1.) and check if there is the "Open Anyway" Message. Klick on it!
Reboot. If still not works, post results of steps 2) and 3).

2) Open a terminal and enter

systemextensionsctl list | grep rme

-3) Have a look into this folder, if you can find the .dext there: 

/Library/SystemExtensions/<LONG-UID>/de.rme-audio.dkusb.dext

Please answer your results for these 3 points, so we can look further...

If possible, additionally sharing the relevant screenshots could help to understand...

For unknown reason sometimes applications who need microphone access ( audio input channel access) don't get listet into the microphone access list.
it is possible to add it manually with a terminal code.
This code here is made for adding Cubase 14, it works.

If someone could correct the code for Totalmix ?

Waedi, with all respect.
1) This has nothing to do with driver-installer problems at all.
2) I wonder, because you already know, that microphone access for Totalmix is only needed for Babyface Units.


I mean, you are manipulating the users TCC.db directly here via sql statements and sudo rights (both make no sense).
Make sure, you really know 100% what you do, before recommending such system-deep things to others. This can lead to malfunction of the whole environment (especially if you mistype sth or f.ex. forget the "~" character)

Additionally, the TCC.db it is related with Privacy Settings like Microphone Access, etc... but has nothing to do with Apples Gatekeeper mechanism.
