Topic: madiface XT/ m1 macbook/ Pro Tools

Hi all, I experience a problem that is definitely not an RME problem, but maybe someone has experienced similar issues.

I have 2 M1 macbook with madiface XT's.  Latest drivers firmware and mac OS...  If I record 192 channels on reaper, all is totally fine. I have used this system to record many many hours perfectly reliably.

If I record on Pro Tools Ultimate on these systems, Pro tools stops recording every once in a while. It acts like it's still recording but timecode stops and recording stops.. Eiher chasing to MTC or not chasing.

"Just don't record on crappy pro tools" one could say... However, I use other systems: M1 mac mini with RME pci cards in sonnet housing, also 192 channels, and these systems run totally lovely.

I have tried all the usual things one tries, and am on a job now where I have some time to experiment, but I can not get the system to run reliably!

Any help is welcome!

Re: madiface XT/ m1 macbook/ Pro Tools

I actually see PT briefly losing contact with the madiface (blinking orange microphone right top of mac OS)
Could this be a cable issue? Does anyone know what cable is officially supported or advised?

Thanksss

EDIT: it does not seem to be a cable issue.  PT briefly loses contact with the RME interface/driver.
Anyone any idea?

Thanksss

Re: madiface XT/ m1 macbook/ Pro Tools

Also interesting; with driverkit 4.17 PT "freezes" as in: it acts like its recording but stops recording, with driver 3.33 PT occasionally stops recording but with a CPU overload pop up.

Re: madiface XT/ m1 macbook/ Pro Tools

For future googlers: I now have a stable recording set up. The workaround seems a bit retarded though.
PT seems to loose contact with the rme driver briefly.
Reaper does not.
If I keep reaper open during PT recording, things remain good.
If I install UAD apollo drivers and connect both the UAD apollo and the RME madiface xt, things go haywire again..
Thusfar I have been testing with the reaper/PT combo without UAd installed and things remain stable for a few days already.

Also for future googlers: the workaround mostly worked, but the systems still stop every once in a while..

An intel macbook was the only real solution in the end...

Re: madiface XT/ m1 macbook/ Pro Tools

Did you also try Pro Tools in Rosetta mode on the M1?

Yup. Same story.
I was pretty sure that would be the solution when I tried. But then it stopped.

Re: madiface XT/ m1 macbook/ Pro Tools

It is likely due to Apple's USB integration. I am experiencing the same issue with the UFX III. For some users, updating to macOS Sequoia helps, while others find that connecting it as a USB 2 interface resolves the issue. Here is an Apple thread discussing it:

Re: madiface XT/ m1 macbook/ Pro Tools

Thanks,
I’m not sure if it’s the same problem though, as I have no dropouts and only Pro Tools seems to have a problem.
It could very well still be a USB issue though.
I have not tried usb2 mode, as it would not actually solve my problem:)
I need all the channels.

Re: madiface XT/ m1 macbook/ Pro Tools

Are you using any hubs or docks?
Did you try all available USB and USB-C ports on the Mac and also a different (shorter) USB cable?
Changing ports was fixing problems for me in the past on some systems.

Yes, tried many variations, thanks smile
