Topic: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

I'm switching from Windows to Linux on a daily basis and using CC mode to have audio working.
It seems that the Chrome-based Microsoft Edge (Chrome included) does not output sound in CC mode.
Similar experience with Tidal.

foobar2000 through the "Default : Primary Sound Driver" works fine.

Can somebody please check this configuration?
I'm running Windows 11 + Edge fully updated.

(tried to search, but CC is too short - perhaps it can be allow-listed by the forum owners)

Thanks! BR, -adi

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

Is the device showing up in the device manager ?
Do you select it as audio output device in Windows audio settings loudspeakers configuration ?

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

Having foobar2000 making sound on the "Primary sound driver" confirms the device is found and the default.

In device manager UCX appears as "Speakers (2- Fireface UCX II (.....))".
Manually checked the "Output Devices" screen in Control Panel and everything is correct.

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

CC stands for class compliant
Theoretically there is no reason why edge sound not comes thru.

Without the UCX connected the sound of the Edge browser comes thru the computer loudspeakers normal ?

Theoretically there is a simple reason - bad implementations that can't handle devices that have more than a few channels...

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

With CC, the mode that is not working, there are actually only 2 inputs and 2 outputs.
So I wouldn't say it's a bad multi-channel implementation.

Switching back to USB brings back the sound in Edge.

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

Page 98 in the user manual :

The Class Compliant mode of the UCX II is not compatible to Windows.
The UCX II will be detected, but automatic driver installation will fail.

Edit : Since the publish of the user manual, the firmware updates for this interface including new CC wich might be usable under Windows.
Make sure you have the latest firmware loaded.

The UCX II does not have a 2 in 2 out CC mode. See manual chapter 33.2. Lowest one is 8 channel I/O. And most probably you did not select any CC mode (in the OS, not the app) but use the default with 20 channels.

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

I'm seeing "CC" on the UCX II screen, isn't that enough?

The only RME devices that appear in Device Manager are:
Line (2- Fireface UCX II (24078xxx))
Speakers (2- Fireface UCX II (24078xxx))

Can attach screenshots if required.

Perhaps we are getting to the issue and there may be bugs in the Windows CC Audio driver or something in what UCX II reports through the USB endpoints.

What I don't understand is why some apps accessing the default driver work while others don't...

Do you actually support/check this functionality on Windows?

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

Windows UAC-2 mode does not work with multi-channel interfaces having more than a handful of these. That is a known and irrelevant limitation - we do have Windows drivers. If you want to know what's present and working in CC mode - a Mac will tell you.

Also when I commented on selecting the right CC mode I was thinking of your desired Linux application, not Windows.

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

Can anyone check, please, if they observe the same behavior on Windows 11 with current Edge?
I am trying to figure out of if it's something broken on my machine.

Having foobar2000 work fine makes me think CC mode can be made to work with Edge too.

I know but I cannot afford breaking the USB port just to switch to/from CC mode.
There are other ways to make this change without having to physically disconnect the USB port.

Why don't you implement them?

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

Doesn't happen that easily...
But you could also dis/connect on the PC side or use this:

+1

Months ago I requested RME to modify the firmware providing us with an Offline feature to avoid physical disconnection of the USB cable when switching from USB to CC mode without turning off or putting the computer to sleep. I will not insist anymore.

My empathy to OP is because as an end User I want to use the options of my hardware as I choose and not as the manufacturer designs them (I know, someone must set the limits, otherwise it would be crazy), so IMHO here is the debate:

Design the features to force the User to use them as we decide or design based on how User wants to use it?

... I don't have the answer, I don't design hardware and I don't know what it means to serve customers in the most reliable way, I'm also sure that it must be difficult or impossible to create features via code that the hardware (maybe) has not been designed for ... BUT I know what I want as an End User.

My conclusion today is that I have one of the most versatile desktop audio interface on the market (the price proves it), a demonstration of real tech-evolution but I have to disconnect the USB cable to enjoy its versatility, so my best wishes to RME to keep improving the balance between your Creativity and our Wishes.

All the best

Re: Chrome/Edge audio not working with CC UCX II

Let's blame RME for not having a crystal ball reading secret wishes out of users brains and fulfill them into the products...?

I can only speak for myself, I want finished products where I can choose that one for my desire as per tech specs and user manual.
The product catalog is perfectly fine for beginners (Babyface) and professionals (Madi/AVB line).

CC-mode is made for iPads, described in the user manuals in details, now it also works for all kind computers and no wonder, Linux users poping up like mushrooms with special wishes. My user-wish, cancel out CC-mode at all.

For the topic make USB off without pulling the cable :
There is USB cables with ON/OFF switch available for cheap :
