Topic: Connecting synth to RME ADI-2/4 Pro SE 2x4 AD/DA

I plan on connecting, via TRS to XLR, my Osmose Expressive E, to my RME

As I am new to the RME, I would like to know if anyone has any advice on connecting. synth to the RME such as any settings on the RME I need to be aware of

Thank you

Nothing special, just set ADI-2 Pro’s analog in’s Reference Level right to have a useful level without overload.

Watch ADI-2’s analog input’s Horizontal Meter, set to “Input Pre FX” to determine a good level.

Well, I just connected the Osmose to my RME using TRS>XLR

My normal listening level is to have the RME volume set at -55dB

I set the analog in's reference level to AUTO

However, while I did get sound from the Osmose through my monitors, the volume, even with the Osmose Master volume all the way up, sounded low compared to when I normally listen to music through the RME and monitors

If I turned the volume knob of the RME up to -40dB, it was similar to the normal music listening level when I have the RME volume knob set to -55dB

So, what I tried next was putting a dual mic preamp in between the Osmose and the RME -- this helped with the Osmose volume level but would distort if I turned it up too much

As I am not an audio engineer, I am wondering if I am missing something

Any advice would be appreciated

Thank you

You set the volume to -55 and wonder why it's not loud ? are you kidding ?
Crank up the volume and get earblasting as comfortable.

I didn't realize that -55dB was low volume for music listening

I assume that when I am writing music in a DAW or playing the Osmose, that the volume at -55dB sounds even lower because it has not been mastered

Re: Connecting synth to RME ADI-2/4 Pro SE 2x4 AD/DA

The full amount of the music is at the zero position. -55 is very low.
How loud this is depends on your loudspeakers amp.
This -55dB is just a number, telling nothing about your listening situation.
But it says there is a lot room left to lift the volume up to zero.

My monitors are Dynaudio Core 59 connected to the RME via AES with the SPL level on the Dynaudio 59's set to 88dB

Re: Connecting synth to RME ADI-2/4 Pro SE 2x4 AD/DA

Pretty powerful speakers.
I do not recommend to crank up the volume in the ADI-2 to full amount.
As you found out from -55 to turn up to -40 helps a lot, you can go a little further and try -30, you will do this with care and find a sweet spot where it is comfotable, not earblasting.

Do you think I am correct in that -40dB when using software instruments in DAW sounds similarly to -55dB normal music listening level because the software instruments in the DAW have yet to be compressed/limited?

Yes

Yes, totally normal to have different monitor levels for different tasks, tracking, mixing, mastering, listening for pleasure, gaming/TV/film etc.

Ref Level “Auto”, albeit helpful sometimes for a quick set, can’t replace that one single look at the input meters.

Press Encoder 1 or 2 until you see the global meters page.
Your Osmose level should show between -10 dB and full scale at the analog input’s meter.
Manually change analog input’s Ref Level to reach that.

Inserting an additional analog preamp instead of setting Ref Level doesn’t help a bit, the “Auto” setting will bring down the level and stay there for ever!

Pre-recorded and mastered release versions of music track always are way louder than live instruments, 15 dB difference is quite normal, BTW.
Mastering has pushed up their volume while largely reducing dynamics (dynamics = the difference between loud and quiet parts of a song)
