Topic: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

Foreword

Microsoft offers a Windows version for Arm CPU – that’s nothing new, although these having received not much attention, especially in the audio world. That changed in 2024, when Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X CPU in current Arm notebooks, together with Microsoft offering a well working emulation for native Windows apps, made these new notebooks really useable with standard Windows software.

Now audio is always a bit different, and emulation does not work for interface drivers. So one needs WDM and ASIO drivers that are compatible to Windows 11 Arm to be able to use pro audio interfaces (like ours wink ). It is our pleasure to announce exactly that – a MADIface and a USB series driver that works with x64 Intel computers as well as current Snapdragon X Arm notebooks running Windows 11.

Unrivaled Support

We tried our best to not give you a half-baken preview that misses a lot of stuff, but instead a finalized product where everything imaginable just works*. 100% compatibility, with the latest feature set of drivers and TotalMix FX. This is huge, because these drivers support ALL USB interfaces ever built by RME, back to the year 2009 (Fireface UC) - we’re talking about more than 27 different devices. Many of them are available used, so if you want to check out what Snapdragon-Arm can do for you the audio interface will not be in your way. Supported are:

USB series driver: Fireface UC / Babyface / Babyface Pro / UFX / UCX / UCX II / 802 / 802 FS

MADIface series driver: MADIface XT / XT II / USB / Pro, Fireface UFX+ / UFX II / UFX III, OctaMic XTC, ADI-2 Pro/AE/FS/DAC, ADI-2/4 Pro, Digiface USB / AVB / AES / Dante / Ravenna, DO USB.IO

* Note: These drivers include a lot of changes. While we really appreciate user feedback and reports, please DO NOT install them on critical production systems until the release version is up on our website!

The Details

The USB series driver 1.260 and the MADIface series driver 0.9849 are now 64 bit drivers, compiled with latest Microsoft tools and using latest Microsoft guidelines. They work on both Windows 11 Intel computers as well as Windows 11 Arm computers. Minimum requirement is Windows 10 (1709). While these drivers do not support 32 bit Windows as OS anymore, 32 bit apps can still be used on an x64 system (standard Windows compatibility).

Both WDM and ASIO are available. For Arm ASIO is included as 32 bit and 64 bit, both Arm64EC and Arm native.
The installer is completely reworked and now copies current files to C:\Program Files\RME\MADIface and C:\Program Files\RME\Fireface.

Changing between the former and these new drivers on Intel systems, back and forth, is easy and showed no issues in our testing.

As a bonus from the new installer a restart after initial installation is no longer necessary, and will also no longer be required for future updates. TotalMix FX and Settings dialog are immediately available in the notification area and are also updated instantly. A manual restart is necessary mostly when changing from the current drivers to the new combined x64/Arm ones.

To completely uninstall the driver start rmeinstaller.exe from the driver archive and choose Uninstall. Uninstall via Windows Apps (Add & Remove) is no longer supported.

There you have it – something to play with under the Christmas tree wink

Performance

A quick note on our Snapdragon performance experience so far: Some audio apps on Arm might require to set the power mode not to Best Performance, but Best Power Efficiency, to be able to use latencies below 1024 samples. This might be true only for low CPU apps, though, and needs further investigation, but in any case the driver has no influence on this. As an example, on current computers Reaper and Cubase need about 256 sample buffer size for a fully click-free operation.

I just tried my Fireface 802 with my Samsung X Elite laptop and managed 220 tracks wit Dom Sigalas's Cubase test at 128 samples, pretty damn impressive! Thank you RME!

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

That's Awesome Matthias,

Congrats to you and the whole team, again going above and beyond regards not only developing and releasing the drivers for Windows/arm so quickly, but also ensuring support for the USB interfaces for the last 15 years.

I have always told my clients that RME is a lifetime investment , and you prove it yet again.

I am sure this will generate some good momentum for the Windows users wanting a good mobile solution, looking forward to diving in.

This is way cool! Congrats!

Does the team see this as a door to getting a version for Windows ARM (Parallels) running on Mac Silicon down the line?  There are a couple windows-only DAWs that would be great to be able to use on Mac hardware with a RME interface (like Pyramix, Sequoia, etc).

I totally understand that RME can’t support such experiments.

What I can say: after a first (quick n dirty) test:
seems to work fine on a M1 Sequoia, running Parallels as Host and a Win11 ARM64 as Guest.
Used a FF802 (the USB Series Installer) for this.

My 2019 Intel CPU supports up to 1 TB of ECC RAM. When will the Snapdragon support at least 128 GB? Will it ever support ECC? So I don't see the "future" coming any time soon here.

wonderful news .Thanks MC and the team for once again proving why RME are still at the top of the Audio device tree after all these years.

It's not somethingk I'll use personally for a good while I think but I'm so happy to see this as i think Windows ARM has the potential to really challenge Mac Sillicone.

No. Maybe it will find its way to certain segment of gear, but trully ARM has no real advantage over x86. Even in consumption if the same node is used.)

Part of x86 apps will be ported to ARM and part never will be ported. And part of it even will not run on ARM. So, ARM will not replace x86 in foreseen future.

I personally do not see any reason go for ARM.

Maybe an addition to my post:
I am really impressed about the performance, RME!
Especially because I use the unsupported win11 VM inside a Mac thing...
128 samples Buffersize - no noticable dropouts/glitches.
Cubase (x64 version), running inside Win11arm64 just plays 3 Tracks to 3 Playback channels on my old FF802.
What should I say? it feels like it would run directly on the host...

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

I decided to give the new driver a spin after for some reason, the latest official driver would sometimes suddenly disconnect my Babyface Pro FS. The cable side on my laptop and interface are both tightly plugged in, I've checked.

Well, the new driver hasn't disconnected my Babyface in whatever way since I installed it 2 days ago. Also, I feel the over all stability of the driver has been much improved! I don't have an ARM machine, but if in the future I'm upgrading to an ARM PC, I won't worry because RME has got my back. Bravo!!!

Happy new year!!!

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

We are currently working on an update of both drivers, hopefully available soon, to remove some issues of this first Arm/x64 version:

- Changes/fixes in the installer: Settings dialog can be called from an ASIO DAW again. Installation program now also works under a user account.

New in TotalMix FX 1.98 x64:

- Eliminates crash when clicking on the playback button for channel selection (DURec)

- Channel status narrow in CRM is retained even if the CRM was minimized (CRM options not visible)

- HDSP9632 and HDSPe AIO: Check marks in the routing dialog now appear on all active channels

- HDSP9632 and HDSPe AIO: Switching off phones in the CRM (none) did not remove them from the CRM

Those last two are not relevant for USB devices, but someone might have both USB and HDSP/HDSPe in use. I'll announce their availability here.

Is the problem that the BF Pro disconnects gone? I have exact the same problem and tried 1001 hacks and improvements with no luck so far (cable, no power-saving for USB, CPU optimized not to go to sleep states and what-not). I have an "old" AKM Babyface Pro FS btw.

Trying to install 1.270 on Windows 10 with a Babyface Pro FS. Have tried installing, uninstalling, restarting, ect. multiple times and noticed the version numbers are not changing in the About section of the Fireface USB settings, saying 1.253. Also, TotalMix says 1.97, not 1.98. The installer is claiming it has installed successfully. Simple oversight or is 1.270 not installing for me?

Yes, but I ended up fixing it just now. I uninstalled every old Fireface driver through Windows' uninstaller in the control panel, there were 7 different versions sitting there. In fact, 3 of them are still there, but they won't uninstall lol. But we're 1.270 and Totalmix 1.98 now!! Hoping I can change buffer sizes without horrible glitches and having to unplug and replug the Babyface in now!

EDIT: Spoke too soon. ASIO won't show up. Downgraded to 1.253, ASIO won't show up there either. Something is horribly wrong, I'll keep banging my head against the wall for now

EDIT 2: Sorry for having a soapbox here. Turns out my usb port is totally wrecked from having to unplug and replug constantly. Emailing support now!

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

The new driver even has an uninstaller, wow wink

What does this return code from installer / pnputil mean?
Usually "0" means everything ok, does "0xE000023D" indicate an issue?

According to ChatGPT (as google search failed) it means
"The hash for the file is not present in the specified catalog file. The file is likely corrupt or the victim of tampering."
But also ChatGPT claimed that there is no list of return codes available, this information is from online postings
around issues with graphic driver installation where the same return code is being mentioned.

I had a fresh installation of Windows 10 and MADIface driver 0.9845.
How can this happen? Can I trust those messages?

Sadly, I found no complete list of return codes on the internet.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/hehhzuudffowmxb8fco87/2025-01-17-MADIface-driver-1.0-uninstaller-message.jpg?rlkey=in1w891st2cud13pruxja5aw8&st=aklcewb2&dl=1

One more observation: During the driver uninstallation, numerous messages flash across the screen, showing e.g. which registry entries are being deleted.

Is there a way to generate an uninstallation log or capture these messages in a separate window,
with the option to copy them to the clipboard or save the log to a file?

Many thanks.

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

After driver deinstallation of old MADIface driver I rebootet.
In the Windows device manager I saw UFX III and ADI-2 Pro FS R BE reported to have no driver anymore.
Then I installed the new MADIface driver 1.0.

During driver installation again a lot of information on the screen,
see previous comment that it would be nice to have a log of deinstallation and also installation messages.

I am not 100% sure, whether I have it wrong in my mind.
Hasn't been said that after driver installation, a reboot would not be needed anymore?
Immediately after driver installation I got prompted to reboot the system.

Before rebooting, I took a look at the device manager and driver settings window and was surprised about the status.
1. UFX III was not visible anymore, neither in device manager, nor in MADIface driver settings
2. Only ADI-2 Pro FS R BE was visible under device manager and MADIface driver settings
3. In the device manager the ADI-2 Pro FS R BE was still listed as "other device" without driver
but at the same time it was listed under Audio, Video and Gamecontroller

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/szxq6uxnbti1l8unob2ky/2025-01-17-MADIface-Driver-1.0-Device-Manager-and-Driver-settings-strange-status-before-reboot.jpg?rlkey=qqxu9jci7r1e24kevor333obb&st=l6yt1qne&dl=1

Shouldn't both devices be displayed (UFX III and ADI-2 Pro FS) after driver installation / before reboot and not only one?
And the one double (with/without driver) ?

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

The latest revision of the 1270 driver works well on my PC. The only thing is, both Total Mix FX and RME USB Settings are not listed in the "startup items" on Windows Tax Manager, and so both programs are not automatically starting up for me. This is strange, as previous driver versions would always auto start when the system reboots. Not this version, though.

Edit: I manually added the programs into the startup folder of my user account by first opening the folder through the Run dialogue: typing "shell:startup" to open it, then I copied the files.

Hopefully the installer could still do it by itself in the next version.

I just tried doing an uninstall and a reinstall, and it functioned as expected. Not sure what happened during my previous install, but it might be because I deleted everything, including registry entires that RME created before installing again? Maybe that was the problem? Either way, it's now acting normally, and both programs start up as expected.

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

I'm back, with my shiny new Babyface. ASIO is still broken. It just doesnt show up, I've tried FL Studio and Reaper. I can see the fireface_asio_amd.dll and fireface_asio_x86.dll files in the Program Files, but nothing... and then I noticed something just now.
In the readme, there is zero mention of AMD processors, only Intel and ARM. Are AMD processors no longer supported? If I upgrade to Windows 11 with my AMD processor, will these drivers work?

Also, like another user, I had to manually add Totalmix and the Fireface settings to my startup, they no longer automatically start up.

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

AMD is not an issue, it works fine. You saw the amd.dll file.

Please try a full PC shut down, instead of a reboot. That can help when something blocks the driver installation.

If it didn't help then check that the unit is set for the correct firmware mode. The CC mode is for iPad use.

Done all of that multiple times, nothing. I think something is horribly wrong with my Windows, maybe in the registry. I'm currently getting ready to dual boot into a fresh Windows 11 to see what happens. Even when I install older versions of the drivers that previously worked, ASIO just doesn't appear with any of them. The Babyface still pops up and works as a standard audio device, it just doesn't have ASIO. I'll report back, for anyone else in the future googling this that might have the same issues.

EDIT: Fixed it once and for all. I created a dual boot of Windows 11 and installed the drivers there, which worked perfectly. So I went into the registry, searched for ASIO, took a screenshot of every single instance, then came back to Windows 10 and typed out every key and value by hand in every possible directory.
Knowing that my drivers are currently being propped up by 3 toothpicks and scotch tape isn't the best feeling, but it's working perfectly. Something went wrong in the installer, that's all I know.

I found this topic from a while back that seems to be providing the same solution, wish I found it earlier: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.ph … 14#p212214
Hope this all helps someone somehow!

Re: RME strikes again – Windows 11 Arm drivers for all RME USB interfaces

I think its demanded to have a clean installation and then using a good backup recovery concept.
Dual Boot is a good thing to test something or to observe newer Windows versions.

If you do not necessarily need Windows 11 (not sure, we are in a Windows 11 ARM thread) I would still prefer Windows 10,
because of fewer changes to the OS, higher stability, no performance sucking VBS, not being forced to use online accounts.
I will also continue to use Windows 10 as long as possible with the 3-year service extension to get security patches, as I am not fond of Win10.
