Topic: BSOD with FF400/FF800 under Win7 64x latest firmware and drivers

Having major problems using either my FF400 or FF800 on a Vaio S11V9E. Laptop is up to date with all windows and vaio updates, and performs the same using either the inbuilt FW400 mini socket (Rioch FW chipset) or an Expresscard FW800 TI chipest.

Running latest firmware (as of 03/04/10) on both FF400 and FF800 and latest driver 2.9998.

Basically both devices seem unstable. BSOD occurs whenever I try to dismount either FF400 or FF800, or if the FW cable gets 'accidentally' pulled out without dismounting. With FF400, BSOD occurs after the device has been mounted for more than about 30 minutes.

System spec:

Win7 64x pro edition
4gb ram
i5 processor
Mobile Intel HM55 Express chipset
NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics card

On the FF400 I get the following BSOD message:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:    BlueScreen
  OS Version:    6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48
  Locale ID:    2057

On the FF800 I get the following BSOD message:

At the moment, both devices are essentially unusable. Anyone got any ideas? I'm pretty desperate for a solution- as I have a lot of gigs coming up.

Re: BSOD with FF400/FF800 under Win7 64x latest firmware and drivers

Make sure you are using the "Performance" power-profile and then try again. Also try uninstalling the graphic-driver.

Re: BSOD with FF400/FF800 under Win7 64x latest firmware and drivers

Meh, tried that with no success.

Tried all the usual suspects, several firewire cables, built in mini FW400 (Rioch) and a Lacie (TI chipset) expresscard to FW800 adapter. Similar BSOD performance on both fireface 400 and 800.

With the FF800 once I've got Sonar booted up, it runs OK until I close and try to dismount the device. With the FF400, I had a BSOD mid recording whilst using Sonar. Also had BSOD just using it to record in soundforge or using RTA software. Haven't tried this with the FF800 yet.

Any ideas? Will try the 3.012 driver, although I suspect thats not where the problem lies.

Incidentally, its a brand new laptop. I initially bought the model below, and had the same problem, returned it after a week (cos I wanted the posh one with a backlit keyboard) and am having the same problems with this machine- so I doubt if its a faulty hardware issue on the computer (as in faulty FW port etc)

Re: BSOD with FF400/FF800 under Win7 64x latest firmware and drivers

I get a similar problem on my FF400 with BSOD message:
The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

It happens when streaming audio from applications like Windows Media Centre or youtube video's etc...(I dont think this has ever happened whilst using ableton)

I've done a Bugcheck Analysis with the windows debugger and it points to the 1394ohci.sys file.

RME FF400 (v3.047)
Ableton 8.2.5
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1, 2.83ghz Quad Core, 6GB ram

Re: BSOD with FF400/FF800 under Win7 64x latest firmware and drivers

Ah! I seem to have managed to get my system running reasonably smoothly by changing to 1394 controller driver to the legacy one. Only had one bluescreen since - although I've hardly tested at length. This is a significant improvement on the bluescreen after 20 minutes I was getting before.

I guess this confirms the problem lies with the firewire driver so the hotfix above might be a good idea for me to install, then try again with the latest 1394 driver?

Thoughts?

Hugh

The hotfix only fixes the *non* legacy driver, so yes, you should give it a try. wink
