Topic: Feedback When Sending Audio Out of Logic Into Outboard Gear

Hi All,

I've been using the FF800 and I'm totally loving it; I think TotalMix is pretty great.  I've taken the leap into mixing OTB and there is no going back for me now.  To my ears it sounds much better and I like how the workflow feels as well.

However, I recently encountered a feedback problem when sending audio out of Logic into my outboard gear.  I typically useTotalMix software for routing audio out instead of Logic?s I/O plugin.  My patchbay is setup as follows:

RME 3 into Comp. out to EQ into RME 5

My Logic setup looks like this:

My TotalMix Software Looks like this:

So far this has worked but recently when I adjust the hardware outputs to the comp. I get feedback; does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?  Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.

Turn down the Total Mix fader on input #5 when you have the outputs active as the destination. You're creating the loop by sending the audio back out again after it comes in.

The audio will still be routed to Logic even if the fader is down.

That should be it!

Let us know how it works out. smile

Thanks dialing_wand for your response! I did try; it eliminated the feedback but no signal is hitting the comp....

Re: Feedback When Sending Audio Out of Logic Into Outboard Gear

Audio comes out of Logic in the middle row... (playback). Goes down to the outputs, and out to your gear right?

I'm not sure how turning down the input fader (top row) would affect any audio being sent.

Can you describe the complete chain? Logic outputs -> Total Mix Playback -> Total Mix Outs etc. etc.

We'll get to the bottom of this! smile

Hey Dialing_Wand; your so awesome! thanks so much for your time and expertise; its working perfectly now.

And you were absolutely right - I was careless with the fader action on input 5 when AN 3+4 was activated.  I need to raise the faders of AN 3+4 (hardware, 3rd row) in order to feed the compressor but the input 5 fader needs to be pulled all the way down when this is done.

I turn up the input 5 fader and turn down software playback faders 3 and 4 (middle row) when dialing in the right comp. and eq amounts but in order for this to work without producing a feedback loop AN 1+2 needs to be activated not AN 3+4.

Should look like this when 3+4 is active:

And this when 1+2 is active and I'm dialing in outboard tone (in juxtaposition to the rest of my mix):

Is that correct?
