Topic: Babyface + USB powered DisplayLink monitor

Hello,

I have recently bought the babyface, mostly for live use running VST plugins.

Right now I put both the laptop and the babyface on a music stand but it feels somewhat dangerous at times, so I'm considering getting a USB powered DisplayLink monitor to put on a stand, and put the laptop and the babyface on the floor in a safe housing.

Would this hinder the performance of the Babyface? in regards to both power supplying and performance.

Here is a link to the particular monitor I am talking about
http://www.mimomonitors.com/products/mimo-720-s
and the FAQ

I am also considering a purchase of the newer Macbook Pro 13" i7 2.7 GHz, which has only two USB ports. (so my question about using a USB monitor with babyface is supposing that I'm using the newer i7 Macbook pro)

Using Logic Mainstage, would I be able to run at 14 sample? I use about 4 to 8 plug-ins at a time, mostly one channel but sometimes two channels. (with or without the USB monitor)

The type of plug-ins I use are mostly guitar effects, convolution reverb, and 8 band parametric EQ. (EQ plugins used 4 instances at the most)

I know you woundn't have a definete answer without testing, but I wanted to know your opinion.

Thank you for your time

Re: Babyface + USB powered DisplayLink monitor

My Mainstage shows only 32 sample buffer in the list. I think that is the smallest value you can set. But works great with the Babyface on an iMac i5.

Re: Babyface + USB powered DisplayLink monitor

hello, thanks for the reply. i think that's the software buffer, and may set differently from the babyface driver buffer. (i don't have a mac yet and running Plogue Bidule on Windows 7, but the software buffer is set differently then the driver's - bidule at 32 and babyface at 48, lowest for Windows)

i guess reaper runs at 14 samples according to this article, and I guess i can use reaper instead of Mainstage

The Babyface has no driver buffer option on Mac OS. The buffer size can be set only in programs like Mainstage, Logic or Reaper. Same on Windows with ASIO applications. Logic has a limit of 32 samples. Reaper has a flexible block size but I'am not sure how this works with unrealistic small values.
