Topic: HDSPe Multiface II + Ubuntu 11.04 x64. Problems.

When I type hdsploader in the terminal I get the following:

hdsploader - firmware loader for RME Hammerfall DSP cards

I have looked but can not find multiface_firmware_rev11.bin in /lib/firmware/hdsploader/. There is not even a folder in firmware that is called hdsploader. I have installed alsa-tools-gui and alsa-firmware-loaders but all I can see in Ubuntu's sound properties are the ATI and Intel sound cards. In programs I can open HDSPConf but not HDSPMixer.

What can be the problem? Regards.

You must build the firmwares manually. You can get the firmware sources here.

Extract it to a folder and type ./configure>make>make install. After that mkdir /lib/firmware/hdsploader and copy the  multiface_firmware_rev11.bin to /lib/firmware/hdsploader/.

Thats it.

After loading the firmware you must start one time the hdspmixer to unmute the channels.

A small script like this can do that:

#!/bin/sh
hdspmixer & sleep 3 && killall hdspmixer

Thank you so much for the help, frog993. I managed to configure, make and then with sudo create hdsploader dir and copy the bin file to its correct place. One thing I don't know is how to exactly setup that script you mention in the end. Can you write a little quick guide, please? Regards.

This is really wierd. I only get the sound card to work if I turn off the power to the external Multiface II so that it lit red. then I start hdspmixer and after that hdsploader. that way it sometimes works and the hdsploader works successfully. It works really badly. I am on Lubuntu x86 now btw.

If I try hdsploader instead I get:

During these things, if I have a player like Audacious playing a song and I will hear sound
for a quarter of a second if I execute hdspmixer during playback and then the sound goes away as
hdspmixer itself disappears right away.

Now to the "solution" but it is not a solution I accept..........

1. unplug the multiface ii external box power and start hdspmixer.

    a2000@a2000:~$ hdspmixer

    HwDep ioctl failed. Metering stopped

Now the mixer shows up and doesn't disappear.

2. turn on the power to the multiface ii external box.
3. start hdsploader in a new terminal while hdspmixer is still open in the first terminal.

    a2000@a2000:~$ hdsploader
    hdsploader - firmware loader for RME Hammerfall DSP cards
    Looking for HDSP + Multiface or Digiface cards :
    Card 0 : RME Hammerfall DSP + Multiface at 0xfdff0000, irq 18
    Upload firmware for card hw:0
    Firmware uploaded for card hw:0
    Card 1 : HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfebfc000 irq 47

4. Touch the faders on Out 1 and Out 2 in the hdspmixer and put them back at 0dBFS.

IT WORKS! I don't know why I need to have my external box turned off when I start
hdspmixer or the mixer will vanish immediatelly.

I noticed that if I logout and login again without any reboot I have to power it off again like "normal", start hdspmixer but this time hdspconf to make it work. if i start hdsploader instead of hdspconf i get the

I hope these findings can help me and others. I am using latest Lubuntu but with a lowlatency kernel. I also had to find a alsa-tools deb package on a website to have access to hdspmixer.

As soon as I close the terminals or the hdspmixer window the sound goes away.

Anyone know what might be going on and why this happens? I would love to fix this because Linux is really interesting to me and I would like to be able to evaluate it properly. Regards.
