Topic: UFX problems on two machines running xp pro
I have installed my fireface ufx on two machines now, without managing to get anything near low latency, with other problems.
The CD installer runs out of the box as it should, and when I first tried getting the interface up and running about a month or so ago I installed what was then the latest flash update for the interface. Total mix was opening fine on my main laptop (2.6 ghz intel dual core, about 4 years old). However, in sonar once I went below 1024 buffers I was getting drop outs and glitchs, audio playing at a weird rate etc - sample rates etc set right. I also had a problem that the real tech sound card t hat came with my laptop kept reporting a "violation" whenever I powered up the UFX...however everyting worked once I clicked ok and it went away...but perhaps this might have been a related problem.
I tried again this week with the latest driver update and the latest flash update. The driver update didn't install as the xp guide states, and I did it from the system hardware tab in the control pannel. It always said the drivers I had were the most up to date drivers on the systems, even though I pointed it to the folder with the new drivers (I doubt the ones in the box on the CD are up to date!).
Just to make sure it wasn't that machines problem I tried it on another del laptop (a 1.8 ghz processor of the same generation, laptop had a gig of RAM etc), so should have been able to perform the same roughly as the other machine. Again I installed the drivers off the CD, and then tried the latest driver of the website, and that didn't really install the way I expected either. When I tried it in sonar on this machine, it worked fine again on 1024 buffer, and reproduced the same results when the buffer was lowered. I'm sure these machines should at least be able to run the main audio out of sonar at a much lower buffer than that without problems?
The only other strangeness on this second machine is that total mix always seems to crash, producing an annoying "send error report, don't send error report" message, and it closes. Total mix began to crash with the latest driver on the first machine also, but with a slightly different message (though this could be due to them being different service packs of xp or something for all I know).
The only other thing worth mentioning is that I am blind, so I'm using a screne reader through the on board sound card in both machines for the speech, so I can't test them by disabling the onboard sound cards..the first machine I tried did report a message as though the ufx was clashing somehow with the on board sound card, but on my del machine, there were no signs of a clash, other than total mix crashing.
Sorry for a long message...is my UFX screwed or what?!!
It seems to work fine otherwize i.e. at rediculously huge buffer sizes I was able to route audio in and out of my daw.
Hope someone can help...At this stage, I'd rather someone who knows what they're doing take over my computer remotely to fix the dam problem!
I'm only actually testing these laptops to try and get the interface going before I setup my new quad core windows 7 64 machine, but I see no reason why the interface shouldn't be playing better with these machines, even though they're 4 years old, they're still relatively capable.
Thanks,
Brian.
p.s. I've no idea how the colours and text work on this f orum, so sorry if this post looks crazy or anything!
