Topic: using the RME HDSP 9632 to do multitrack recording

Hi

I need some advice about how best to use the RME HDSP 9632 card in my PC to record a live band.

I want to record direct into Cubase 6 on the same Windows Vista 64bit PC.

I want to get up to 14 tracks recorded live and simultaneously into Cubase 6.

I have an Allan and Heath CP20 powered mixer but it doesn't have firewire or USB outputs, just the 20 channels with standard jack outputs per channel.

I assume I will need an interface of some kind to take outputs from the mixer and feed them into the sound card and then into Cubase?

Realistically, I will probably only be using 6 - 10 outputs simulatenously, but it would be good to have the option of up to 14 or so.

Any suggestions how I do that?

Hi Barry,
When using the HDSP 9632 you can add one each of the AI4S-192 AIO and AO4S-192 AIO: 4-Channel analog I/O modules you will end up with six analog line level I/O.

This will take a total of 3 PCI back plane slots on your computer. You will need 2 empty PCI backplane spaces available in order to attach these expansion cards.
You then can add an 8 channel AD/DA converter to the ADAT I/O of the 9632.
RME makes the ADI8-DS and the ADI8-QS.

Optionally you could also use a Fireface 400, UC, 800 or UFX setup as a standalone AD/DA.
These options are more affordable than the ADI8 series and have the bonus of being and Audio interface. Any of these would be perfect if you ever end up using a laptop to do any recording, then any of these would be perfect.

You can use any 8 channel ADAT AD/DA converter with the 9632 so if any of these options are out of your budget range you have a few choices.

That's very helpful.  I haven't done anything like this before with sound cards or card modules.  Sounds as if the Fireface 400 or others might be a good solution.

Is it possible to use one of these 16 or 24 track digital recorders then bounce the recorded tracks directly into Cubase?  I guess this might be outside the remit of this RME forum, but if you had a moment.

My aim is to record 16 tracks from a live back and get them into Cubase for mixing etc in the simplest, most cost effective way.
