Topic: Strange Finding, need advice or clarification please.

Preface: I'm using an RME Babyface Pro FS, Windows 11. By default, when loading totalmix for the first time in the bottom right corner it says "Main" only and when you click "Assign" (to the right of the "Main" tab, where it says "Dim, Recall, Speaker B, etc), "Main Out" is set to "PH 3/4" and everything else is set to "None".

I wish I could attach images to this to show but basically I came across this strange finding where if I go down to "Main" , click assign and set "Main out" to "AN 1/2" and "Phones 1" to "PH 3/4" , the soundstage literally widens in both my headphones and my monitors and the sound sounds different (maybe better) More Spacious, and perceived detail. When I switch back it sounds find but narrower and more pleasing to my ears/less fatiguing. Weird I know.

I have created a snapshot of each setting so I can instantly A/B them and there genuinely is a difference.

I'm looking for a recommended way to route this or have this as it was intended. Which one should I go for by default. I implore you to try this and let me know or if a staff member knows how it should be set up from the jump. Thanks very much. I can provide images or my custom snapshots also.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I also have my WDM Devices set to 1

How to attach pictures?
Copy paste like in more modern "fat" forum softwares is not possible. But do you remember the "usual thing" which was the case for all forums years ago? Simply place content to a cloud and link here the URL enclosed in "img" tags.

Purpose of assign is to assign output channels to the control room where control room functions like DIM are possible.
See manual ch 21.4.

Widening sound stages? It should not be the case, check your settings. Maybe irritated by different volume levels? Or did you accidentally change the Phase, look settings behind the tool symbol of Main out.

Routing is a different topic. Each output has an individual submix.
In submix mode select a HW output of your choice, can also be one of the control room.
Then simply move the faders of HW inputs (top row) and SW playbacks (middle row, audio from PC).
As you like / need.

WDM driver is only important for the Windows Operating System and applications that also do not support ASIO.
So for your DAW work you won't need them.
But if you want to play e.g. YouTube audio, then you should create a WDM device at least for the output where your monitors are connected to. If you like another one for your headphones.

Thanks for responding.

To answer this it most definitely is widening it, and no Its not a volume difference or phase setting.

Here are the snapshot images. Try them using headphones.

These screenshots do not allow to reproduce your mixer states completely. Please save this as Workspace and upload that file, then we can check.
