Is RME impacted by the worldwide semiconductor shortage? The RME Babyface Pro FS seems out of stock in almost all UE countries.

Hallo liebes RME Team,

DA, Line Out 1-2 XLR: Ausgangspegel bei 0 dBFS: symmetrisch +19 / +13 dBu, unsymmetrisch +13 / +7 dBu
Das müsste doch sym +19 / +4 dBu sein?

Viele Grüße
Andreas Groß

Hab's korrigiert, Danke.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Well I got a Babyface Pro FS on the weekend as I just needed to get on with my life. I was a little underwhelmed at first when I listened to music played back from iTunes off my Mac .... (I know) Until I realised it wasn't the Babyface it was the actual recording. As I worked through various styles of songs and music I was blown away at just how fantastic some productions and recordings were and just how average others were. I heard stuff I had never heard before clearly on music I had been listening to for decades ... like Dave Gilmour clearing his throat and sighing before playing guitar on "Wish you were here". Artists like Massive attack, Portishead and Kate Bush never sounded better. Anyway .... still learning Totalmix but getting my head around it. I just have 2 questions ... when you lock user interface in the preferences in Totalmix does the hardware override it? And question 2 ... If I decide to ditch my hardware mixer in a year and move up to UFX+ will I get the same or better converter quality? ... I mean real world. Also got to say having an interface this stable is genius.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

I own a Babyface Pro and I was wondering if there was any gain of performance by using the BF2USBC (USB-C cable) cable instead of the BF2USB? What about the Babyface Pro FS?

909

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

It’s still a usb2 device so it won’t make any difference. With my bfp fs I use the old type usb as it isn’t knocked as easily as usb c. I did start using the usb c cable but when moving other cables behind my pc I kept knocking it out.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Hallo Matthias!

Meine Hardware: Macbook 2018 - i7, Intel
Software MACOSX Big Sur 11.5

https://www.dropbox.com/s/rj0zjg37wh1ca … e.jpg?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cdbzg4l2qvyob … r.MOV?dl=0

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Hallo!

schon etwas komisch.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

The usb cable is too short for my taste. Is there a USB cable a longer one I can use with the card or does RME specifically recommend using the one that comes with the card?

917

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

I use the one that came with it for one pc but I also have a standard long usb cable which I swap over and use for my other pc. There is no difference in how they perform.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

On my Mac the BFP FS appears as "Babyface Pro (730xxxxx)."

Would love to get rid of the numbers and just name it Babyface or BFP.

Is it possible to change this? Running Catalina 10.15.7, connection is USB.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

I’m sure this has been asked so apologies.

I have the standard BF Pro and  have a chance to upgrade if I can get the FS.  What’s the user experiences after upgrading - is there a difference?  Or would it just be a waste to spend another £100 and swap out for the fs?

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

I thought I'd reply to my own post, just in case anyone ever wonders the answer to my question (as nobody else responded).
There is a difference, I was able to sell my Babyface Pro and get the FS for only a small amount extra.  I can hear a difference though slight I wouldn't say that was the best part of upgrading - the switch on the bottom was one of the better features, and the improved headphone output.  Also a small thing but I like the new USB C connector.

Unless you were in my position - my warranty had run out it was 5 years old as well, it might not be a consideration for you, but it does offer some improvements that just keep the device running at the top of its game.

Compared to anything else I looked at I still prefer the Babyface Pro design,  I travel a lot and the slick jog wheel sits fairly flush to body of the interface, all the others - Audiofuse, UAD Apollo, and even the cheaper ones are just so bulky.  This slides into my backpack without me worrying a knob is going to get pulled of.  Still the best from every way you look at it.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Does the remote control of TotalMix through MIDI still work in class-compliant mode? I would like to connect a class-compliant host and map the first eight channels to the ADAT output.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

In CC mode there is no TotalMix. Only on iPad, and there is no MIDI remote I/O.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

I'm working with a RME Babyface Pro FS and have two questions:

  • I installed the USB drivers from the RME website (driver_usb_win_1212.zip). It seems the available APIs are MME or Windows WDM-KS. Is there an additional driver that needs to be installed to get WASAPI?

  • Can I write three channels of data simultaneously? In looking at the config it seems that I must select channels 1/2 or headphones. Ideally I'd be able to write a 2D array (containing three channels with N samples) that are played through the headphones (one channel for right, one channel for left) and the third channel sent to the XLR output in the back. Is this possible?

You'll need to spend sometime familiarising yourself with Totalmix. It's possible to send a stereo signal to the headphone out and then a mono signal to the speaker out for your three channels.

Not sure about WASAPi since I'm on a Mac.

I could not figure out how to install Totalmix. I went to RME downloads (https://rme-audio.de/downloads.html) and selected Babyface Pro FS, downloaded the drivers and installed. I could then see Babyface Pro FS as a device (technically, many devices each with a different channel selection). However, no Totalmix. When I select software, I only see "Totalmix Remote", which does not appear to be what's needed.

Have you checked out the manual? The 'Driver and Firmware' chapter says: "After a reboot, the icons of TotalMix FX and Settings dialog appear in the notification area."

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Babyface Pro external power supply - DC connector size?

Greetings. Brand new Babyface Pro user here.

The NT-RME-2 would cost over $100 Cdn here. Gulp...

So I am going to hunt for a comparable alternative (hopefully lockable).

The manual states:

"NT-RME-2
Power supply for Babyface Pro. Robust and light-weight switching power supply, 100 V-240 V AC, 12 V 2 A DC. Lockable DC connector."

and also:

"• Use an external power supply, any standard one delivering 9 - 14 V DC with at least 1 A will work. The connector needs to have – outside, + inside."

However, the size of the DC connector is not described. I am no expert on the subject but I believe such connectors are of differing sizes(?). (in/ext in mm).

Can anyone please tell me the connector required for the DC in port on the Babyface Pro?

Thanks in advance!

I'd like to know the answer to that too. DV247 is the only site that doesn't say how long or if it will be in stock again. I assume that it's unlikely to be available this year at all sad Part of me would like to know if it's a logistics/customs problem specific to the UK or if it's more global.

Virtually any USB C hub will do, but best of course is to err on the higher-quality side. I use a Vava 8-in-1 model which works very reliable.

Be sure to put the Babyface in CC mode for iPad use (press Select & Dim while powering on, toggles between „CC“ wnd „PC“ mode) - I forget this every second time and wonder why nothing happens in Totalmix. ,)

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Hi. I have a couple questions...

I just bought a Babyface, which I plan to use both for home-recording and to play live, using a Macbook Air M1.

First, if I use the Babyface in DAW mode, with Logic Pro X, apart from using Totalmix to switch Phantom power when using condenser mics, are there any other settings in Totalmix that I need to tweak or change?

Second, about playing live... If I'm using the Macbook Air on battery power, does this provide enough stable power to the Babyface via USB to run it for a few hours?

I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Hello, i own a UFXII and a babyface Pro (nonFS). Normally the BBF is for on-the-road use,
but i wanted to try and use it as a converter that goes into the UFXII via the AES input. This way i'd get two extra channels from a nice clean preamp.
I managed to do it by connecting the adat optical out to a coax converter and in to the AES XLR input.

I guess that the signal is strong enough with short cables to work without an actual AES conversion box, which seem hard to find and pricy for the basic amplification thing they do.

All great, and a neat little find, however i was hoping to be able to use it standalone. But it seems like adat conversion only works when it is connected to a computer?

I was trying to power the BBF from a powered USB HUB that isn't connected to a computer, but then it seems like only the analog routing part works. (I was planning to buy an RME_NT_RME2 for using it standalone in the long-term)

Can anyone from RME confirm this?

Thanks,

937

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

I've figured it out: The settings of the standalone mode seem to be separate from the ones in regular use. By using the onboard controls to redo the routings of input channels to the OPT1/2 channel in standalone mode, this now works flawlessly. So i now have 2 extra preamps at home at zero cost!

Hi guys,
is it me, or are the only questions that are not being answered stock-related ones?
I've been waiting for a BF pro in stock for quite some time, and no updates are available, at any store.
I don't mind waiting, but I do mind waiting without knowing if I'm waiting for nothing.
Has there been any comment on the matter?
Cheers!

hello, i just bought a new Macbook Pro M1 max and i tried to install the drivers to use my Babyface pro fs, it worked perfectly, but i installed a virtual machine Windows 11 (arm version) and there is a problem with the windows driver here. on the rme website, there is a windows driver for win7 to win10 but no drivers for windows 11, i heard that several person could install well the win10 driver on windows 11 but it doesn't work for me on the arm version. when i plug-in my babyface it is reconized in the device manager but not as a sound device. is there a way to fix it ? i think the problem come from the driver which don't detect the babyface well on win11 arm version. i'm kind of lost hahahha, please help

thank you so much for your fast answer, yes as i said i heard that win11 users which use windows on intel have no issue.
maybe the problem is about arm ? windows 11 ARM is still BETA version and a lot of software don't work on it because the os functioning is different.

do you know if rme will support arm version of windows 11 when it will be release officially ?

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Hello, I’m testing the Babyface Pro FS and when I plug in headphones to 3,5 mm socket, the minijack plug is inserted much easier than usual, without much resistance and „click” sound. Usually – when pluging and unpluging jack –  you have to put a bit more effort, to prevent accidental unplug the cable. Do you have the same in your units or this is just the case of my particular unit? The 6,3 mm socket works normal, like any other.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Hi,

I have a new issue with the BF Pro. Whenever I change buffer size OR sample rate while in Cubase Pro 11 system-wide sound gets silent. And if I close Cubase and change buffer size to a lower value (ie from 128 to 64 samples) audio glitches badly. Didn't happen before with Cubase Pro 10.5

I did check all the settings in Fireface USB Settings and they are as they were.

946

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

> Whenever I change buffer size OR sample rate while in Cubase Pro 11 system-wide sound gets silent

I don't see how that should have ever worked. It only works when the 'system-wide sound' is totally inactive/off during the switching.

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

MC wrote:

Thank you for answer. I have one more question and I would be grateful for response. In TotalMix it is possible to set faders to +6 dB position. Above 0 dB position corresponds to yellow and then red indicator on Babyface screen. Please correct me, if I am wrong: 0dB fader position corresponds maximal nominal Babyface output levels (+4/+19 on main and +7/+13 on headphones) and if I set the fader obove 0dB, the signal can be overloaded.  So, it is safe to don’t exceed 0dB fader level? Am I right?

948

Re: The official Babyface Pro Thread

Yes. The 6 dB are reserve in case the signal is not loud enough (far under 0 dBFS).
