Topic: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Here comes the next update on our macOS USB DriverKit driver, see here for former version 4.04 with some more useful information: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=35444
Version 4.06 has several small improvements in performance and compatibility. It comes with TotalMix FX 1.77 final.

System requirements: macOS 11 and up, Intel or M processor (Apple Silicon)

Installation: Double-click on driver_mac_usbdk_406.zip to expand the archive file to the driver file Fireface USB DK 406.pkg. Installation works automatically by a double-click on the pkg (package) file. Users that tried version 4.0 will not see the Allow dialog and button anymore. All others should get that dialog, and before reboot should check that in Security & Privacy, tab General, the RME driver is allowed to load. If not unlock the settings and allow it. Then reboot computer.

Notes
A previously installed kernel extension driver, like 3.27, does not need to be uninstalled. It will be overwritten automatically. After that you could set the system security back to normal, unless any other existing kernel extensions still need reduced security.

To go back to 3.27: easiest method is to drag the Fireface USB Settings app found in the folder Applications to the trash can - only use the Finder for this action. With DriverKit this Settings dialog is 'the app', upon removal all driver files belonging to it will also be removed automatically. You will be asked for permission for the removal of the extensions. If done simply reinstall the former 3.27.

As an alternative we also made a version of the 3.27 driver available that should reliably remove the DriverKit extension during its installation, see link below. The one found on our website for download is not guaranteed to always do that.

Former driver 3.27 with updated installer to remove DriverKit 4.0x:

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Update: the zip now includes TM FX 1.78. Simply redownload 4.06 and reinstall it to have the latest state.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Installed on MacOS 12.6 with DF USB.
Install successful in one go.
After reboot per installer DF USB recognized ok
DF USB lock to ADAT/SPDIF signal ok
TM works ok
TM snapshot recalls ok
ARC USB works as usual = ok

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

one not before noted quirk: When TM mixer window is open, but another app has the focus, ARC USB Speakers B knob first brings TM to the foreground and a 2nd press hides the mixer window again.

My pref would be to make it so that when TM mixer window is open regardless of which app has the focus that the ARC USB Speakers B button hides TM mixer instead of bringing it up and a 2nd press then brings it up + puts it on the foreground in focus.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Your pref does not make sense to me. Using the ARC I want to check what it does and that requires TM FX to be brought into the foreground (become fully visible). Closing it seems useless and an unnecessary additional button push for the most logical action. Maybe others can chime in here how they see it. But please don't ask for an option to have it both ways.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

I updated to MacOs 12.6 and now I get the audio output distortion reliably after a couple of minutes. Re-boot doesn't help anymore. Driver 4.06 doesn't change the problem. I have to go back to 3.27.

Nuendo 12.0.40, RME Madiface XT, MacMini 2018, 3.2ghz 6 core i7, 32gb ram, Monterey 12.5.

No desire to have it both ways.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

I have a rather strange issue after I install this beta driver (I was using the stable driver before installing the 4.06 beta)

Now every time I restart my laptop, 2 of the 4 DAWs I use won't remember the audio interface I select, and upon opening the DAW, they automatically change to Macbook Pro internal speakers as the audio interface.

Logic Pro X(10.7.4) and Reaper(6.67): No issue, remember the selected audio interface upon laptop restart

Studio One (5.5) and Ableton Live(11.6): Both won't remember the audio interface I set after laptop restart, they will remember the selection as long as I don't restart the laptop.

Computer: Macbook Pro 14" M1 MAX 32 core 64GB RAM
OS: Monterey 12.6
Audio Interface: RME UFX+ via USB 3.0 connection

Never had this issue with the stable driver.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Another issue that only start to happen after updating the driver to 4.06.
If I power off and UFX+ and sleep the Macbook Pro overnight, power on the UFX+ and wake up the Macbook pro the next day.
Youtube playback on Safari video and audio will be out of sync have to quit safari and reopen in order to solve this issue.
Also never have this happen in 3.27 driver

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Please be more clear: 'stable' driver means the former kernel driver 3.x? The new DriverKit drivers need different handling from the DAW, as showcased by Cubase which first did not want to use it at all.  Ableton and Studio One seem to need an update to handle these correctly.

Thanks MC, yes. I was using 3.27 driver before installing the 4.06 Beta

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Tried v4.06 with an M1 Pro running MacOS 12.6 connected to a MADIface XT.

High-numbered input channels (193-196) now appear in their "fixed" positions, but
High-numbered playback channels (193-198) still move to channels 97-102 at sample rates > 48KHz
(at least in DigiCheck NG v0.89 beta 1).

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Hi. Thanks very much for the USB DriverKit driver. Really glad for RME's continued support.

However using this public beta, version 4.06, I must report an issue.

Kit
Macbook Air, M1, 2020, macOS 12.6.
RME Fireface UC, this 4.06 driver.

Issue Faced
The Fireface AN1&2 volume resets to 00 after being set much lower when the Macbook sleeps with no audio playback. Usually pretty deafening and alarming result occurs afterwards.

This has not occurred for the 8? years I have owned the UC running release drivers. it is most certainly this beta.

Steps:
Boot Mac, Boot Fireface, Switch on Monitors.
Totalmix and the FF USB settings launch as expected.
Totalmix is set so the Main is assigned to Main Out AN 1/2, which is hooked to my monitors. Software Playback on AN 1/2 is set to zero.
Set the volume low, so main shows -30 or whatever.
No music / audio, Macbook sleeps after x minutes.
Whilst it is asleep, Fireface resets volume to 00, visible on the front panel.
Wake Mac, go deaf when a notification triggers.

On previous drivers, I'm certain the FF UC disconnected from the mac when it slept - the red light on the front came on.
I don't believe that is the case here - the FF UC doesn't show the red light but must have a... moment... where it forgets the volume set in Totalmix.

The volume buttons on the keyboard work to control the outputs, the software fader in Totalmix works and the knob on the front of the box works too.

Is there a way to pull you a log the next time I see / hear this? It isn't every time the Macbook sleeps (that would be too easy, of course hmm )

Thank you.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

We will check this, but I suspect the Mac's volume control to do this, not our driver. A log is not possible here.

As you didn't mention your software - are you aware of this?

https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=10662

And the volume load options in the Preferences of TM FX?

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

I updated from 4.04 to 4.06 yesterday. Today I had a total disaster with MS Teams - Pulsing full volume distortion through the speakers.
I restarted Teams, rebooted the machine and still had the same result.
Reverted to 4.04 and all was fine.
I didn't have any problems with 4.04
I use an Aggregate Device for MS Teams (to stop Teams from altering the Mic volume). The only device in the Aggregate is the Babyface Pro fs.
I have the BF at 96KHz. The Aggregate device also runs at 96KHz.
MS Teams version is 1.5.00.22362 which is Apple Silicon native, but I notice that the Core Audio Driver (MSTeamsAudioDevice.driver) is still Intel.
I'm running Monterey 12.6
MBP M1 Max 10/32, 64GB RAM, 2TB
I do have the BF connected to a USB-A hub, but this has not caused issues in the past with 3.27 or 4.04
Firmware is v200 in both use cases.

Happy to test things.

Dominic

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Thanks for getting back to me, MC, regarding the Main volume jumping whilst the Mac sleeps.

I left out the software because I didn't realise it could be specific. Understood, thanks for the link and confirming I'm not using Cubase.

This is occurring in Safari.

So to update my steps:
FFUC connected to Mac,
Reboot Mac,
Launch Safari,
Play then pause a youtube video,
Let the Mac sleep

FFUC resets Main to zero during sleep and… it has started panning L95 now too.

This has occurred three times in a row.

Reset the pan, turn down the volume, sleep = panned left and zeroed main outs.

I can confirm that the Fireface UC, when the Mac is sleeping, shows the red Host State light for about 5 seconds every minute or so.

Totalmix Preferences / Snapshots / Do Not Load: Main Volume is selected from the dropdown.

Let me know.

Thanks again!

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Cannot get the Flash Update Tool to work.  MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch late 2013.  Running Big Sur 11.6.5.  Connected to Fireface UC with USB.

I ran 4.06 driver install it said it worked.  I clicked the Allow button to authorize the loading of the driver and the button disappeared which I am assumed authorized the 4.06 driver.  It said the install worked I then tried to run the Flash Update Tool.  Which seemed to open but would not give me a window.

The 4.06 driver does not show up in the Library Extensions.  The first time I tried this and before the restart,  I ran the Security and Privacy systems preference and clicked the allow button (which seemed to work). Each time thereafter the allow button does not show up.   However I cannot get past this point and the driver still doesn't show up and the Fireface UC is not recognized.

I have now wasted 4 days on this and have made NO progress.  Please help.

I tried to load the 3.27 driver but it will not work either.

Thank you,

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

4.06 - I am experiencing some crashes of de.rme-audio.dkusb.
Bar some weirdness with Sound ID Reference software, Im not actually noticing the crashes of Totalmix or Fireface USB settings but Console is generating crash logs.
May possibly have something to do with the Sonarworks "Sound ID Reference" Software. That thing is temperamental.

System= MacOS Ventura Dev Beta 9, Mac Studio M1 Ultra, Logic Pro 10.7.4, Sonarworks Sound ID-Reference

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Question: I updated from macOS 11 with 4.04b to macOS 12 without reinstalling the driver. Did this procedure mean I was still running the macOS 11 version driver also in 12? Did my later installation of the 4.06 post-update change this driver version, i e from 11 to 12? Or is this kind of thing dynamically handled?

For whatever reason all small issues I had with my RME Babyface and the beta in macOS 11 are gone in 12.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

This doesn't work. Fireface USB Settings app can't launch - it dies immediately after trying to launch it & the UI does not appear. Doesn't matter if USB device is connected or not.

On M2 Macbook Air - MacOS 12.6

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

After the last Big Sur 11.7 update I lost my UFX with 3.27 driver again. So I gave the latest 4.06 (with TM 1.78) another try.

The system becomes very sluggish every now and then. The problem seems to be with TotalMix, which sometimes uses up to 100% cpu time. The mouse moves very erratic (stays at one point, then jumps to the next, etc), and mouse clicks are not registered or only after several seconds.

Quiting TM immediately makes the system responsive again. I looked in /var/log/system.log but could not find any clues.

This is on a late 2014 iMac 27" retina, 4 GHz Quad core i7, 32 GB memory.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Thanks for the updated TotalMix. Installed and testing.

Main Out is still jumping upward on sleep. Thankfully, not to 00.

Set Main Out to - infinity. Full muted.
Sleep.
Main Out jumps to -59 on the Totalmix software interface, -58 on the front of the FFUC.

Thanks again.

Edit: 05/10

FFUC main out just jumped from a non-mute value to 00 & L93 after sleep again.

So, mute jumps to -58
any other volume jumps to 00 and pans.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

I just re-ran my quick CPU test in native Ableton Live 11 with 120 tracks of three note chords playing "Grand Piano" with a buffer of 512 samples on the original Babyface. Original M1.

3.27 in macOS 11: 120 tracks before crackling and CPU overload indication (original values)
4.06beta in macOS 12: 80 tracks before crackling and CPU overload indication

That's a 25% loss! Is this to be expected with the new user space drivers? I'll have to reinstall 3.27 to see how much of this is macOS 12. What do you think? Can performance get back to what 3.27 pulls off or is a loss inevitable? How can we help you?

Now you know why I'm running 1.21 Thunderbolt driver. It's just not worth it to switch to these newer ones unless you want more problems and a cut in track count. I'm awaiting a new Mac Pro 2019 because of all this angst over software and drivers not working properly on the new machines. Love my MBP 16 but so many things half working, if you want to make music on a machine that just works, don't beta test this crap.

This beta driver is not crap in any shape for form, despite those results. It's a beta and I knew what that might entail.
What can I say? I'm a natural born tester. I test things also on my free time, unpaid and do my bit so that others can get working stuff. When I'm working people pay me good money for the same thing. Sosumi.

Another embarrassing post of yours. This thread is about USB not Thunderbolt. And for Thunderbolt we just published a completely reworked version that looks very promising, and is definitely not crap.

Hi MC, where one can download the new published Thunderbolt driver? is that compatible with UFX+ and Apple Silicon M1Max computer?

I have the BF at 96KHz. The Aggregate device also runs at 96KHz.

I do have the BF connected to a USB-A hub, but this has not caused issues in the past with 3.27 or 4.04
Firmware is v200 in both use cases.

Happy to test things.

Just had the same problem with 4.04. Have reverted to 3.27 but I have no idea if it's the driver or MS Teams, as the BF Pro fs works in other applications - but MS Teams also works with my other interfaces (Built in sound and Avid Carbon), meaning there is no common thread.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Hey yall I was having some issues w/ 4.06 on m a MPB M1 Pro (glitches/dropouts on simple playback from browser or ableton 48hz). I was using a Caldigit TS3 and then the update thunderbolt 4 version of the product. Both had the same issues. Just downgraded to 3.27 and it seems to be stable so far.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

UPDATE:
I rolled back and I've just had the same problem with 3.27 (I used the installer that removed the 4.04 beta) so it has nothing to do with the RME drivers. I don't know what is going on, but I guess it's MS Teams specific, or a problem with my Mac or a hardware issue. Not a driver issue anyway.

Quick update: since this post and the downgrade to 3.27, my system has been running stable again. (Probably until the next Big Sur upgrade. hmm )

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Fresh news - I installed the driver included here, 4.06 and then installed the one with the updated TotalMix. I've flagged the issue I'm seeing about the Main Out volume jumping and panning unexpectedly on sleep, which is still occurring.

I note that the first post states "don't worry about the old Driver, it'll be overwritten"

However I just received the pop up notification in MacOS about a Legacy System Extension from RME being installed.

That's unexpected, right?

Quick update - Found the kext in the StagedExtensions folder and it takes a terminal command to delete.

Unfortunately, deleting the spare kext hasn't solved the issue I see.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

H all. I've been observing some strange issues (using 4.06 beta driver). However, I am not certain it is the driver.

If I am playing audio in Pro Tools Ultimate (2022.9) or Logic 10.7.3 and I open a Safari page and scroll a lot,  the audio coming from UFXII will sometimes intermittently drop out of glitch.
Or if I am working in Pro Tools and command-tab over to a Quicktime video, play it...stop it and then come back to Pro Tools and hit play, the audio will go all weird, until I toggle a setting in the Playback settings window, such as "Aux I/O" or "Optimise and low buffer settings"..... basically anything that will reset the audio driver.

So any of the problems I was reporting on this 4.06 beta, are more than likely an issue with the state of the current OS (12.6.1 here). Something is interrupting the audio streams.

This is with a Mac Studio Ultra.

[edit]

I have reverted back to the v3.27 Driver today and it's been working flawlessly again.

I've had nothing but trouble getting Teams to recognise my original babyface, unlike with Zoom that works fine. It does work occasionally. As all other software seems to work fine, also with 4.06, I just use my internal audio for Teams.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

It looks like Teams audio driver is Intel based, it's not native M1. That could explain erratic behaviour. See https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/ … -p/3589463 and read comments.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Running the 4.06 beta driver on 13.0, and previously 12.0.

I have one issue only, where the sound control (up/down) slider no longer functions and controls the actual sound (same with keyboard shortcuts).

It's like there's a disconnect between the driver and macOS after prolonged use. Rebooting fixes this, until it eventually 'disconnects', and then volume control no longer works (it does via total mix though). Not sure if this is caused by my machine going to sleep, but wasn't this behaviour has only begun since moving from a non-M1 Mac Mini to M1.

Yes, I had this problem too with 4.04 and 4.06, on Monterey. Tends to get fixed by changing the volume with the wheel on the BF Pro fs, suddenly the keyboard shortcuts work again.

This turns out to be a specific problem with Teams on M1 machines when other people in the meeting are sharing Powerpoint presentations in Live Mode. It's quite widely reported. A very weird bug.

It's not an RME problem, it's a Teams problem. The odd thing is that it didn't happen on the Intel binaries of Teams, only on the later Apple Silicon native builds.
I managed to royally hose my entire Office install by removing all of Teams, re-installing the earlier version and trying to stop Microsoft from updating. Depite my best efforts, Teams still updated all on its own and I wrecked all my Office licensing and authentication.

Anyway, the point is that it's not an RME driver issue, and certainly nothing to do with the beta either.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

I noticed Wavelab does not like the v4.06beta driver. In v3.28 everything works perfect while in v4.06beta the audio does not even start. Something with the driver check by Wavelab I guess. (Digiface USB)

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

You might need to use an Aggregate Device. See note on Cubase/Nuendo here:

https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.ph … 69#p188269

This has been fixed in the latest Cubase/Nuendo updates, that's why we no longer mention it.

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

Hey guys, my Mac (ventura) detects fireface in class compliant mode. But when CC mode is off, the driver 4.06 is NOT working. I've allowed those drivers to not be blocked, but wit comes with a sample rate of 32000 HZ, meaning the Mac is not even detecting the hardware, flash tool is also not working so I can't even update the hardware. Can anyone help?

Re: New macOS RME USB 4.06 driver – public beta test

hi - Does anyone know if updating the firmware on a UFX to 361 in order to use this new driver will mean it still works ok on an older computer (intel trashcan) which is still using the 327 driver? thank you!
