Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

Yesterday I had big update day, I updated UCXII usb driver (the only working way was uninstall old and install new), new Jriver 31 player, manual update to Windows 10 22H2 and I also installed DC NG.

Very nice upgrade for DC, thank you. But playback stability problems started to appear. Max in 5 minutes some kind of dropout or like reseting asio device or disappearing for half a second. Once even blue screen. I have never experienced something like this before with old DC.
So I stopped using DC NG and from that moment no other dropouts, everything worked very well.
Machine is powerful Intel with 6 cores and hyperthreading running on 4GHz.

I will try to test it again in the evening if it is still the same.

And one suggestion - would it be possible to configure in Totalmix function for starting DC NG with configurable button on ARC USB? Like currently pressing button and show/hide TM on top. I know it is not so simple because it is not part of TM, different paths, not already running, and so on. But could be helpful when running something in fullscreen. Not so important, just nice to have.

Thank you so much for this, I'm excited to try it. I REALLY hope there is a chance that in the future you can make it support direct output, rather than only asio. I need a way to analyse the main windows output when working on game audio mixes. Most of the video game sounds designers I know use rme interfaces, so having the new Digicheck be useful for this would be great.

I have some corrections and findings.
As I said before after driver update and other update everything worked perfectly even after several reboots except DC NG making problems.
Next day after cold reboot - no ASIO devices anymore. Uff... I was really angry. Today I did:
Disconnect UCXII,
COLD reboot, Device Manager- show hidden devices, uninstall UCX driver,
COLD reboot - check device manager if driver is really out
COLD reboot - install latest usb driver
COLD reboot - connect UCX
Now everything works perfectly. DC NG has no problems now.
So problem was that new usb driver installation was not perfect for some reason.
Before I did only standard built-in reboot. You must do COLD reboot -  switch off (shutdown) wait manually switch on.

You seem to misunderstand how DigiCheck works. If you do a playback, it doesn't matter if it is via WDM or ASIO - DC can still receive the playback data via ASIO. This is a special feature of our driver and DigiCheck (old and new).

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

Thanks for making an updated version of DigiCheck for Windows.

One issue I've seen is that the bottom labels, as well as scale, of the spectral analyzer is disappearing when I make it vertically smaller. This for DigiCheck 0.61 Beta where I've changed the display range to 60 dB.

I'm using Windows 10 Pro, version 22H2. My GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 using driver 531.41.

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

DigiCheck NG bugs/feature requests:

- vector scope has L/R audio inputs swapped!!!
- peak level measuring is off compared to old DigiCheck and other level metering tools
- vector scope optically clips the drawn signal (auto-gain compressor/limiter not working fast enough?)
- impossible to have multiple DigiCheck NG instances running at the same time
- no true infinite peak hold for peak level reading
- horizontal peak meter stuck with lower dB limit of -50 dB (should go lower than that)
- feature request: getting rid of scale readings on one of the two sides of the graph to save space
- feature request: option to have the same layout as in old Totalizer
- feature request: keyboard shortcut options as with old DigiCheck (like CTRL+H to reset spectrum analyzer peaks)

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

I was able to install and use the new DigiCheck NG on my Win 10 Desktop (with BabyFace Pro FS). The graphics are a lot cleaner and I could follow the new functionality layout without difficulty.
However one of the uses I had for the old DigiCheck (5.96) was to record audio files from e.g. YouTube in the default .wav format, use AnyAudio Converter to change the file to mp3 and then load it into my iTunes playlist (typically to learn a new song for my covers band)...
Unfortunately I couldn`t find the Global Record function in the NG version, so I re-installed the old 5.96 and am happier now.
Is it coming in NG, the Global Record functionality or am I just blind?

The opinion of RME is that they do not want to bloat the new software and keep it as compact as possible wich in turn leaves a good working DAW system hanging with the older software. I run a very well contained and suboptimized system with windows 10 and an older Nvidia GTX 760 GPU and will just like you, as it is now, not be able to benefit from the new DigiCheck NG without investing in new hardware. Big disaponment of course and hopefully RME will reconcider and make a build that works for not only the latest hardwarehost. All other sofware i run, both old and new works perfectly so it's not feasible to buy new new stuff just to get some meters working.  I'ts kind of the market benefit of RME that their interfaces and peripheral sofware work with almost everything at alltimes.
Keeping fingers crossed that DIGIcheck NG will work for me in the near future.

The graphics used in DigiCheck NG for Windows is very simple, really, but you've decided on using graphics features not found on older CPU's when implementing it. That does not affect me as I use a only a few years old NVIDIA GPU, though.

As for Windows 11: CPUs just a few years old are not supported for Windows 11, and they work just fine otherwise on Windows 10, but Microsoft decided otherwise. I suspect Microsoft will backtrack on this when Windows 10 approaches EOL October 2025, or extend Windows 10 lifetime with more updates.

My soon 10 year old PC is still working fine for what I use it for, running Windows 10 Pro.

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

Global Record should be available later.

Regarding the graphics issue: it seems that so far there is (only) exactly one graphics routine not working on older GPUs. In that case we will try to add a workaround in the next version which should not be too complicated and won't screw our code.

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

Hmm I've tried getting DG NG to work on 3 PC's now, although none of them are newer than 2018 systems. None of them have decent graphics cards either- but one uses windows 11 and is a £800 machine.
It would be useful to have an idea of what specifications are necessary to allow DG NG to work; I don't think its' all down to the graphics card capability. The dude who posted previously (and others) seems to have a decent PC... and they're unable to get it to function.
This is what beta testing is for, right? Eventually RME will get this issue straightened out, or at least nail the settings  one should adjust to get it working on all Windows machines. Pinpoint the tickbox we may have overlooked, etc.  Cos I doubt they can make allowances for every possible video setting that unassociated programs  make incur (i.e; making tweaks in the video processing your computer does without you being aware of it, cos it has permissions to do so) But I have faith in their developers sorting this out.

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

- DC NG will not run under Windows 7, it requires Windows 10 or higher.

- DC NG uses Direct3D 12, which was not available before Windows 10, and is not supported by the above old Intel CPU graphics generations, or similarly old other graphics cards.

- DC NG Windows/macOS is a cross platform project that uses Metal on macOS. Therefore adding global support for old PC systems is not possible.

I said it before: if you want to to use DIGICheck with PCs that can not use DC NG then use the existing DIGICheck.

Ok, your PC might be two years old, but not all of its components.

Your Zotac GeForce GT 710 (2 GB DDR3) is from 2016 and the chip architecture (Kepler 2.0) even from 2013 (this is 10y old!!).

Times and requirements are changing, and what used to be sufficient for hardware 10 years ago may no longer be adequate now.

There are numerous examples of this, such as Steinberg and other companies discontinuing support for Windows 7, or the cessation of support for 32-bit plugins since Cubase version 9.

Your graphics card was designed at a time when Windows 10 and Direct3D 12 had just been released. It is a "stripped down" passive card, meaning it generates minimal heat, making it ideal for DAW systems. However, it is quite likely that this card lacks certain features or capabilities.

Integrating such an old graphics card into a modern system in 2021 would not have been my preference.

A better option would have been to acquire a more recent passive-cooled card. Maybe even better, you could have chosen an inexpensive semi-passive gamer card with 0dB-Zero-Fan-Modus, where the blowers do not activate when the card stays under a certain temperature threshold during office- or DAW-work (usually 60 °C). Such a card can also support the CPU well for video editing and rendering tasks, which makes your PC even more flexible.

In contrast to that, passive-cooled cards can have issues of their own. Less performance, large coolers occupying much space or that they run quite hot and thus generate a lot of heat (of course not all cards, but those with a little more performance).

RME concider the the 7xx series old and recommends to go with the old DIGIcheck. I have kind of the same quirk with a perfectly tuned DAWsetup where everything is dialed in,dual ultrawidescreens and runs all my apps and plugs like a tank. It's simply not feasible to get a new graphicscard just to get some meters going. Also i'ts kind of hurting RME rep as rocksolid, futureproof when it comes to both hard and software. But again...  it's just some meters....  it's no biggie aslong as they keep the runningdrivers and totalmix going :-)

Be the RME knight and defend the choices of calling it bloating to support a GPU that still gets new drivers if you want, but also understand that the more users point this out as an issue the better are the chances that RME comes through with a workaround to get DC NG going for them. Also, no one has been requesting a review of their GPU and your preferences is simply not relevant for this issue and also abit condescending. That's not what we're here for!

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

In terms of development. When it comes to HW support, you can't go back at will.

You have to make a design decision, which libraries to use that do the job well and where you have the least efforts to maintain the code in the future.

Another thing is that you do not have such old cards flying around in development. You can't prepare for everything.

Better be glad that RME continues to offer such software for free and has even bothered to port it to the PC. The rewrite for the Mac was needed, the rewrite for the PC not. Not every company does that, and for free.

In addition, you still have the option of continuing to use DC 5.x at any time.

If DC NG is so important for you, simply get another GPU, those little passive cooled ones are anyway not that expensive.

And regarding

> EVERY other software developer manage to run their stuff on the "ancient" Nvidia 7xx series GPU

In a bad case of luck, you will need to scrap even your entire system (like me and plenty of other users worldwide) although the HW is still performing very well under Win10. Then get a better GPU and your problem is entirely solved. Windows 10 support end is not that far.

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

uh- seems I opened a can of worms here! Anyway I've been thinking of a PC upgrade for a while now- I gotta buy a laptop for my girlfriend so I don't feel so bad about buying one for myself.
I've been looking-it'll have to be a new PC cos otherwise I'll never know if the CPU is up-to-date enough- and the cheaper new laptops have Intel UHD graphics, the pricier ones have Radeon or GeoForce GPU's. Reckon Intel UHD is up to the job for digicheck NG?
My current HP elite 8300, which cost £50, has been running my RME set-up for years and it's solid. But it's too old to allow for any gpu upgrade, and HP stuff is so locked in I gave up on that idea. And for ages I had digicheck running into a superwide NEC display (16:4, 43" screen) which was so useful- groups could monitor themselves from a distance. But scaling it could be awkward- NG seems to be more flexible in this regard.  So I need to get a audio work PC  that's modern, on my meagre wages. Maybe the best spec 11.6" screen laptop (£300?) I can find will do the job.
So it's not purely because of Digicheck NG- although its' release has forced my hand- I need to get with the times anyway

Re: DigiCheck NG for Windows – first beta public release - now available

DigiCheck NG for Windows version 0.63 beta is now available for download. This version fixes bugs and brings the Windows version to the state of the current Mac version. Changes:

- Much improved DC measurement in the Bit Statistics & Noise instrument. Better separation from audio and selectable integration time.

- All current settings are now saved on exit and shutdown. Settings like the dividers in the Global Level Meter are also reliably remembered.

- Improved AGC and Release Time of the Vector Scope to work more similar to the 'old' Windows version. Note that your current settings might need a bit adjustment to fit your personal taste again as they are not identical to before.

- Installer now registers the Workspace files so a double-click on any such file will start DC NG with it

- Added workaround for the error '109'. DC NG can now be used with hardware that showed this error before. The workaround addresses the fade-out effect in the Vector scope. If you run DC NG on such a system the Settings panel of Vector Scope shows 'Release Time (limited GPU)'. Note: other errors like '4' will not be addressed, they require more up to date graphics cards. And Windows 7 is not supported.

- DC NG is now fully DPI aware in multi-monitor setups. This includes moving it from a 150% monitor to a 100% monitor (example).

- New icons
