Topic: Total Mix Crash under macOS Sonoma

I just went from a Mackintosh to a M1 Ultra Mac Studio. My Interface is the Madiface XT. With the new Computer I get lots of freezes of Totalmix, which then leads to freezing of Youtube and Apple Music.  I am during the installation process, so, I have not tested Cubase, yet.

In the beginning this always happened a few minutes after every restart. After looking at the forum, I went for this driver ….

… and this Software version of Totalmix (just replaced it by dropping it in the Apps folder).

But even now, I still get freezes of Totalmix! It just does not happen as quickly any more. It my also be related to the Apple Music App or Safari or Youtube,

Anyone else who got similar freezes? Or any hints what I might try?

You did not mention firmware, did you also update the MADIface XT firmware version?

Yes, I already was on the latest Firmware. To be sure, I just downloaded your link and the firmware updater showed nothing newer to update on: PCIe 56, DSP 42 and USB 191.

This needs some more info and tests to maybe pin it down:

- when TM FX freezes does audio still work?

- did you check the Settings dialog for USB errors shown?

- does it help to close or completely exit TM FX?

- are any MIDI ports assigned within TM FX for in and out?

I have the exact same issue, so I add to the topic:

Mac Studio M2
macOS Sonoma 14 (also 14.1)
HDSPe Madi FX - latest firmware
Latest DriverKit Driver 1.10
TM v. 1.85

- TM freezes only when the machine was unattended and this can happen over nigh, when the screensaver went on (so even just after 5m or so) or after waking up from sleep
- Audio does not work anymore (any kind of playback)
- Applications like Spotify or Youtube playback "get stuck"
- TM can't be opened anymore
- When TM is forced quit and restarted audio playback is possible again (a reboot also fixes the issue)
- In my case no MIDI is used in TM

No, it does work no longer after freezing. Only restarting the OS makes it work again.

Yes, I never saw anything else than "CRC 0 Errors". Although I just saw that it shows "USB2", although it is connected with a USB 3 cable - the same one that perfectly worked on the Mackintosh before. I am not sure. Is that normal?
edit: Now it shows USB3 again after a restart. I am not sure why ...

- does it help to close or completely exit TM FX?

No. I can force-quit TM, but the Audio only comes back after a restart of the OS.

- are any MIDI ports assigned within TM FX for in and out?

No, I never used the midi of the Madi FX or routed anything to TM FX.

Can you exit TM FX after boot and setting your desired settings, to check if the error still shows up later?

Also: if you Force Quit TM FX in the hanging state you usually get a report wihich might include useful info for us.

Since yesterday, I did not have a freeze, so, I will have to wait and see when it will happen next and report back. Regarding the settings: I got multiple times a pop up window leaving me with the choice of recalling the settings from the device or uploading the default to the device. But I will also keep that and mind and report the next time it happens.

I just had to force quit TM and saved the crash report as a txt file (for some reason I cant see it in Console app and therefore not export it) where can I send the log to?

Edit: I've just used the email function of the forum to send the log to MC

Ok, meanwhile I got some more crashes. This is the report after the last crash of total mix. It is always the same: during playback, the audio suddenly stops and all apps using audio crash together with Total Mix FX. I can only resart the PC. Otherwise, Total Mix will not start again.

Ich weiß nicht, ob es hilft, das Problem einzugrenzen. Aber wenn nicht, wäre es nett mit zu sagen was sonst zu tun ist. Ich verzweifle hier mit dem Interface! Ich hatte noch nie derartige Probleme mit RME.

Ok, two cables and dozens of searches for the possible cause of the problem later I still get some problems. The crashes seem to have disappeared now (at least for two days of leaving the computer on). I still had a few crashes with the last USB 3 cable which is 5 meters long. I then tried a 5m active USB 3 extension and a very short cable after that. Now, there is a problem, which is exactly reproducible: When I switch on the Madiface XT after the computer was on, the interface is shown as a USB 2 device in "Fireface USB Settings" (I guess it should not be called Madiface XT setting instead, but that what the app is called after installing the correct drivers for device ...). When I switch on the computer after the device on, it shows as USB 3 device as expected.

I also get some drop outs when starting Total Mix or plugin in some USB devices. Is there any hint which cable I might be looking into? I need one with at least 4m length.

I have found out some more things, which I also posted in another thread here about USB 3 cable length:

1) Every cable (down to 2m) I plug into the Mac Studio's own USB 3 Port shows me the Madiface as a USB 2 Interface (I have to reboot, then it's ok). When I plug it into the the USB-port of the Caldigit Thunderbolt 4 hub (with USB 3 ports), that problem does not occur.
2) In every case I get a small audio drop out when switching on Total mix FX. If this only happened for this incidence, I would be fine with it. However, I have never noticed anything like that before and that is why I don't trust it ... I might be wrong, however, and this is just normal on Macs due to some USB security or whatever!
3) However, with the USB-Port from the Hub, I get occasional glitches in audio when listening to longer pieces of music. And at least with the longer cable. But it could also be with the shorter ones, I would have to listen longer to wait if something happend ...

it looked good on first sight, but in the end I experienced dropouts again.

How I could get rid of those was only by using exclusively the Madiface XT on my thunderbolt 4 Hub (which I bought for a lot of money to accommodate three SATA SSDs in USB enclosures and other USB devices ). The Mac Studio USB A ports don't work properly with the RME interface!

I have two questions to hopefully end this madness:

1) Do you have any recommendation for a Thunderbolt 4 to USB 3 Adaptor or Hub that I could get for just the Madiface XT? It is actually a waste of bandwidth to use a full thunderbolt port for just a USB 3 interface, but I can spare one port! But I have no clue what adaptor/hub to use that will hopefully not induce more problems with the audio interface? And I was hoping I would not have to buy a pretty expensive hub that is actually built for more than one port ... the alternative would be to get a PCIe expansion chassis to house the Sonnet USB 3 card that previously worked so well with the Madiface XT on my Hackintosh (I see the irony, yes!). But that also seems quite wasteful to me ...

2) Is there any way to troubleshoot quicker? My problem is, it sometimes takes multiple days until some dropouts come back. And I need to be able to quickly test whether a certain configuration induces problems. I don't know for a fact, but shouldn't a massive load on the interface (e.g. a DAW project playing back audio on all (or many) channels make any instability of the USB connection apparent immediately? It would be good to know any way of deciding within a short timeframe wether a certain setup does work or doesn't ...

There seems to be major problems with the USB type A ports on the Mac Studio, I have not seen these to be working for audio devices at all. You can use the TB4 ports as USB 3.0 type C connections with an Apple adapter or a simple USB3 cable (type B to type C) and that should work fine.
