Topic: Raydat + 9652 issue

Hi there,

I'm having an issue that I would need some help for.
I've upgraded computer & soundcard with RME Raydat a while back, all working great.
I still had my old 9652 PCI (not PCIe) and figured out it could be working together with my system to increase my I/O capacity.
Used a PCI to PCIe adapter, and it actually works great, both cards are recognized well and all seems to be good to go.
ADAT I/O's all good, wordclock all good, but the SPDIF of the 9652 doesn't seem to work.
If I plug the same breakout cable to the Raydat, all is green, but connected to the 9652, no sync and no data is going through.

I know it's a bit of an odd setup, but rather than buying new products, if old ones can still work I'm keen to do so.
Tried to fiddle around with the settings, but nothing seems to work here.

Is there anything I should know, is there any hardware limitation or something I'm doing wrong here.

All drivers up to date, and really tried to switch from one card to another with the exact same cables and breakout adapter. On one it will totally work and on the other not at all.

Thanks for your help

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

This is the breakout cable for the 9652 card :

And this is the breakout cable for the RayDat

Not the same cable, I guess this is the reason for your issue.
The RayDat has AES outputs, the other card has not.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

I'd love it to be just a breakout cable adjustment !
Thanks for your input

I have a DIY sub-D connector here, I'd just need to know the exact pinout to try it out.
This same DIY connector was used on another old RME product and it was working great for the SPDIF connexion, I wonder if any connexion has changed here and would need to know the SPDIF / sub-d connector pinout if that would do the trick

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Yes the pinout of the 9652 is different. I have 9652 and 9632 and the breakout cables are not interchangeable.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Great to know that it should work with the right cable.
Could anyone please give me the correct pinout for the 9652 please smile ?

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Sorry, my bad, a google search found that answer from another topic.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

All perfectly working now... so nice that RME made the HDSP cards stackable, thumbs up!

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

That was fast!
Have fun.
Oh what PCIe to PCI adapter are you using?

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

After doing all my setup change and wanting to start using it, I came across an unpleasant issue.

All looking good in totalmix
All looking good in the DAWs (Cubase or Ableton), they show me all the inputs and outputs perfectly.
But when I activate any I/O from the 9652, things don't work as they should.

It seems that when the 9652 is in use, the DAW doesn't pass any sound through the Raydat anymore.
Same issue with both softwares, a bit different reactions, but quite similar.

When trying to do some routings through the 9652, the sound shows well on totalmix (the page of the 9652) and it goes through the gears they are attached to, but the Raydat doesn't pass the Software Playback through anymore. I don't really know what's the issue yet.

I really hope there is a way to have it to work !!

This is the PCI to PCIe adapter I bought a little while back

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Are those two cards synced via a cable digital ? It has to. check Settings.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

they are synched via wordclock with a bnc cable.
Settings page shows everything synched

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Did you install different drivers ?
Both cards should use the same driver.
What is the device manager telling ?
Are both cards active ? With what driver ?

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Just did a fresh install of the driver downloaded from the website when I had the SPDIF issues yesterday.
(and firmware update)
Device manager shows same drivers for both cards and are active (I mean they show well, they appear in totalmix and show all the I/O in the DAWs)

Driver date : 18.10.2024
Version : 4.4.9.0

On both cards the same

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Have both cards set WDM device number to zero ? Just in case Windows is doing some mess.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Good call Sir !

There were 3 WDM devices on the Raydat, 0 on the 9652.. and that seems to work.. I need to test a bit further.

Now, I do still need windows sound somehow big_smile
But something to explore here for sure... I'll keep testing.

Thanks a lot for your help already !!

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

It's going much much better now.. I wasn't too optimistic a few hours ago.

I could reactivate the main windows WDM device and it still works, I guess maybe one of the other I had in use were doing something funny here. I am using those other WDM channels specifically though, but I'll see how to reconfigure them if they interfere with a normal use of ASIO.

now it seems that I have a lot of extra latency when using the 9652, but I'll take a bit more time to fully test, as it comes on and off.

Thank you very much for your time and help, and to RME in general, you rock!

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

I'm still experiencing issues unfortunately with this setup.
It's kinda working but not stable and trustworthy enough for an everyday basis.

I sort of need to play with WDM devices to be turned off to have ASIO working, and I experience serious latency issues when I start to put some external devices (hardware fx) into the mix.
I can't really find the exact logic for it at the moment. But I'd love some help to troubleshot it.

If the mix Rayday + 9652 isn't really a good idea, I guess I should rather go for a double Raydat setup, but I wouldn't go for that yet if that's not going to solve the problem.
I'm keen for any idea here. Thanks

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Question of budget.
An UFX lll would probably solve all your problems, and empty the budget.

Both cards in your setup actually using the same hdsp driver.
Replacing the 9652 with another RayDAT would not change this driver situation.
USB or Madi driver would be a game changer.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Thanks for the answer and the time taken for this topic.

I'm happy to give full precise details where it's relevant.

I don't think I lack giving useful information in this thread, I'm just trying to find the right thing to spot on at first and figure out where the problem may lay.
Waedi already managed to help me heaps by targeting the WDM devices to be an issue, I had no idea that could be the problem.

I have used more that one WDM device to do some routings for audio streaming, if WDM devices work as they should, they can be very useful to deal with apps like OBS, so if I need more than one, that is so.

Fact is that issues have been quite random and odd with this new double HDSP cards setup. I'll give all details needed when they count.

Main issues :
- WDM device would crash my ASIO, if a deactivate the WDM, ASIO would go well again.
- Latency, in simple test mode. I'm having one VST to just play a sound with my midi keyboard, all great. I add one external HWFX, send or insert, all ok! I add a second HWFX (connected to the second card), I have a latency of almost 1 second between my midi keyboard hit and the sound coming out. It's not here latency that needs to be measured in ms, it's a gap between all is working great and it's all lagging hard.
Both situations experienced in Ableton and Cubase. So I don't think it's DAW related.

I surely want to know my setup, and adding a new HDSP card stacked is a new thing for me for sure.
Just reporting my experience and wanting to find where the problem may lay.

UFX lll may sound like the big upgrade... but all my adat are connected to non-madi RME converters, so it's not only upgrading the main interface, but also the converters connected to it, which would definitely be a budget issue.
If the actual situation wouldn't get solved with another RayDat card, it's already a good info, thanks !

little edit : my answer here was referring to a post that has been deleted, some of this reply here may loose sense.

Yet both issues are typical for unsynced cards. Please show us the Settings dialog for both cards.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Where does the word clock come from that is connected to the 9652 card ?

What digital audio equipment is connected to both cards ?
There is a device with SPDIF optical out to the RAYDAT and with Wordclock BNC to the 9652 card connected.
This device has to be in clock-mode internal. Is that the case ?

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

I have a Lavry Blue AD/DA converter that is generating the clock source for everybody.
Raydat is slave receiving the clock from the Lavry by SPDIF.
9652 receiving the clock by wordclock from RayDat (BNC cable)
Rest is connected by ADAT, slave to it's host.

maybe that's not correct and I'm happy to check different settings, but before adding the 9652, all was working great this way

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

From what you describe the sync setting seems to be fine.
I would do for a test, sync the 9652 by optical from the RayDat with a toslink cable.
Just for checking if this is better ?

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Ideally, all toslink should go to AD/DA converters to use gears.
Dedicating 8 channels worth of analogue connexions just to sync the two cards would be a waste to my liking, wordclock should do the clock thing between the 2 cards, or?

27 (edited by waedi Yesterday 22:39:16)

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

It is only for a test. You don't need to lose eight channels, in case it is needed you may use a toslink splitter box
https://www.thomann.de/de/lindy_3_port_ … litter.htm

The wordclock of the Lavry can be bad, thats why I recommend to do a test without this.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Cool, I'll give it a go, see if changing who is master of the clock makes a difference.
I was never sure how to clock my 6-7 devices cards and gears, who should be the main master of the chain.
Thanks for your time again, so much appreciated, I owe each of you few rounds !

Another question : did you push the blue termination button on the expansions board ?

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Another question : did you push the blue termination button on the expansions board ?

I haven't touched that thing yet... should I?

I'll need more time testing, right now everything works like a charm when WDM isn't interfering, it seems.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Here is another one that may give a hint.

I have a project with 1 basic VST (operator) + many HWFX in Ableton.
When I load it up, I have this severe midi latency when playing any key, like half a second or more.
If I change the buffer size, all goes well again. Like if I have to refresh the latency/buffer size setting for it to work.
Doesn't really matter the buffer size choice, I have to change it once for it to "pick up"

32 (edited by waedi Today 00:31:40)

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

half a second latency is not"working like a charm" and it is not midi latency it is software latency, as you change buffer and the latency gets better.
This behavior with the buffer size setting is not normal, on wich card do you make this buffer action ?

And yes I would push the blue termination button.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

I actually suspect the midi latency being a problem from my motu midi interface rather than the audio interface.
Changing the buffer size on one card changes the other card accordingly, it's not like each card can have it's individual value.

Re: Raydat + 9652 issue

Record some Midi to the Metronome and check if there is also this latency. I guess the Midi Notes are in the grid pretty well.
I have a Motu MidiExpress and it is a great Midi interface.
