Topic: USB Flash tool (not) running

Greetings,
I just updated my Intel Mac Mini to Sonoma (14.4). I installed the latest device driver (for UCX USB) before figuring out that I needed the firmware flash. During that install process, I did Allow RME security access (thru system prefs)

I then watched the Kernel vs Extensions video. Jumped into Recovery mode and tied to put the Security settings to Reduced but under Sonoma Reduced isn't a option, only Medium. So I set it to Medium and rebooted. I grabbed the "fut_usb_mac.zip" installer and ran it. It opens and recognizes the UCX, but clicking on Update does nothing. No progress bar change. Also, in the Activity monitor the app is running but not really doing much at all.

Help me Obi-Wans, you're my only hope. ;-)
Thanks!

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

The FUT needs a working driver.
You have to install an old driver prior to flash.
Use the usb_mac_331 driver
After success FUT, install the usbdk_mac_410 driver.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

Yes, what waedi writes!
Reduced security is needed for kernel extension driver but not for driverkit one. That’s exactly the reason why RME developed the new drivers.
Sadly the kext driver is necessary to install the updated firmware on some older interface models.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

Thanks folks. That worked. It's mostly a repeat of what I did previously but this time it worked. So clearly I missed something the first time.

Thanks for your time cool

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

Sorry to dredge an old topic but I'm having the same issue and the only old driver available for me on sonoma is driver_usb_mac_333. I am not able to use the driver update at all.  Sonoma 14.7 Mac studio M1 processor.  Appreciate any guidance.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

What exactly is the problem here? Of course the update will also work with 3.33.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

The exact problem seems to be that the flash tool does not stay running.  It will open and close almost immediately.  It does not give me a window to see anything really.  thanks for the reply.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

You will need to set the system to "Reduced Security Mode" in order to install the KEXT driver on an Apple Silicon system.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

I've had the exact same problem as jeneratethis, same specs (Sonoma 14.4.1, M1)

I have tried what waedi said.

But as shooten said, now only the driver_usb_mac_333 is available, the 331 is not there anymore.

I've installed the driver_usb_mac_333, restarted my computer, and when I try now to open the "fut_usb_mac.zip", the window doesn't even appear.

Maybe it doesn't work with the 333 version and only works with the 331?

Thank you for your help

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

I doubt that the interface works. You can play and record audio? If not then the driver is not active, and then the FUT will not start. There is no functional difference between 3.31 and 3.33, both work when installed correctly as described in detail in the readme and in post #8.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

Thank you Jeff.  When I rebooted, I was already in reduced security mode.  Is there anything else I can try?

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

Make sure you approved the RME driver in System Settings / Privacy & Security:

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

Hi Jeff,  That was done as well.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

Then you may also check MacOS system preferences / General / startup items and extensions / Driver extensions
hit the i symbol at the right side, it is a button
a hidden switch may appear, it has to be ON.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

Does the unit show up on the Mac System Report?

Perhaps you switched the unit into CC mode for iPad? CC mode should be off for use with the RME drivers.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

@Waedi  I'm on Sonoma and do not see that option under General

@Jeff I only upgraded to Sonoma and did switch anything in the unit.  The goal is to get Totalmix back so that I can control the UCX Fireface.

Re: USB Flash tool (not) running

So you guys did give me an idea.  I cycled the power and the unit is now showing up in the system report and Total mix is back running.  I'm going to run it through its paces before I mess with it any more.
